Initially, some worried that a story not focused on the Straw Hats might not resonate with fans, but this special episode proved to be an enormous success. As a result, its director Megumi Ishitani, scriptwriter Momoka Toyada, and character designer, animation director, and storyboard artist Keisuke Mori have garnered even more acclaim. A recent interview disclosed that one pivotal scene in the episode was inspired by Megumi Ishitani’s personal experiences with fan letters.

The pivotal moment in question is the heart-stopping finale of the episode, where a young fan of Nami carefully tears her letter apart to give her a chance to escape the Navy unharmed. In the interview, Ishitani explains that originally, the girl was meant to rip the letter into small confetti pieces, but after receiving her first fan letter, she modified the scene so the girl only tore the letter in half. Even before the world got a glimpse of the “One Piece Fan Letter”, Ishitani had already left an indelible mark on the One Piece universe with her involvement in some of its most critically acclaimed episodes, such as 957, 982, and 1015. Her fingerprints were also all over the Egghead Arc’s electrifying new opening theme, “ASSU!”. Known for her meticulous approach to storyboarding and her keen eye for detail, Ishitani’s work is consistently top-notch. This dedication and skill are evident in “Fan Letter”, which undeniably contributed to the extraordinary success of this One Piece special.

Though seemingly minor to the audience, the careful consideration given to details like the number of fragments in which a letter is torn is what truly sets Ishitani’s work apart. As she explains in her interview with Newtype, her preference for shots featuring flower petals or cherry blossoms falling stemmed from this choice. Notably, Episode 1015, one of Ishitani’s directed episodes, employs a similar shot during Yamato’s flashback, replacing the petals with feathers to underscore this point.

In the final scene, a character rips apart a letter. Initially, I envisioned her scattering it into tiny pieces, like confetti, as I have a fondness for scenes filled with falling cherry blossoms or petals. However, as I pondered over that shot, an unexpected event occurred – I received my first-ever fan letter from a viewer.

Ishitani shared that she altered the scene following her reading of a heartfelt fan letter, finding it invaluable and deciding not to tear it recklessly. “I opted to have her rip it in half instead. Once the scene was completed, I carefully reassembled the letter and taped it back together,” Ishitani explained to Newtype, wrapping up the interview with this touching sentiment: “Something as precious as that requires careful handling.
