The upcoming live-action adaptation from DreamWorks Animation, titled “TBA,” hits theaters on June 13 and offers a fresh take on the 2010 animated film with the same name. Dean DeBlois, the creative mind behind both the live-action remake and the trilogy based on Cressida Cowell’s books, initially hesitated to transition into live-action filmmaking.
In an interview, three-time Oscar-nominee DeBlois shared his reasons for eventually embracing the idea of live-action dragons, which he had previously criticized as “lazy.” However, upon considering the opportunity to create a fresh environment for Hiccup, Astrid, and Toothless, he shifted his perspective.
Why DeBlois Changed His Mind Regarding the Live-Action Remake
DeBlois explained that he had two main reasons for creating the new film. Firstly, during his conversation with Universal, he was reminded of his previous thoughts about live-action remakes. He expressed that these remakes often appear purposeless and thus seem like squandered opportunities.
He went on to say, “Perhaps you could use that budget to fund something fresh, something that would captivate viewers and potentially launch a new series for your company. However, I recognize this is a risk-adverse industry, with these films being large and costly productions. I find myself feeling quite guarded about the characters and their universes.
Even though I wasn’t entirely convinced it was essential, I am incredibly proud of how the three actions I took have come together to form a more substantial coming-of-age story, as DeBlois explained.
He mentioned, “Due to time constraints during the production of the animated films, we had to focus on certain aspects. Now that we have more time, we can delve deeper into the mythology about how the tribe formed and expand the character development a bit more, particularly for Astrid who was somewhat overlooked before. She’s an interesting character even in the animated movies, but I saw potential in exploring her backstory and her complex relationship with Hiccup.
He went on to suggest considering the tangible, earthy sensation of riding a dragon if they truly existed among us. Instead of delving into the whimsical aspect, we’d focus on capturing their lifelike quality. Imagine sitting astride one and soaring through the skies in breathtaking detail – that’s what I aim to portray in my work. I want to create something authentic, heartfelt, and realistic without attempting to overshadow animated films.

DeBlois Admitted He Had Doubts Ahead of the Premiere
In a fresh take on the narrative, the upcoming movie features Mason Thames portraying Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid. DeBlois and DreamWorks are garnering anticipation for this production, which is scheduled for release in 2027. They are keenly interested in hearing from fans about their reactions to the live-action film.
At the debut of How to Train Your Dragon in Epic Universe, DeBlois admitted he had some reservations prior to the initial showing. “This was the first time we showed it to anyone,” DeBlois explained. “I was indeed anxious, not because I didn’t believe in the movie, but because I wasn’t sure if people would take to it. After all, they might be too fond of animated films.
The Live-Action Film Builds on the Mythology of the Animated Movie
The writer mentioned his concern that some viewers might question the necessity of transforming the film into a live-action version, with statements like “Why bother?” or “It’s too soon,” given the success of its animated counterparts. However, he and his team aimed to demonstrate the value of their adaptation by enhancing character depth, action sequences, and expanding the mythology.
