In a forthcoming production, Adam Pearson from “A Different Man” has been cast as the central character who’s life and hardships have moved people for centuries. This role is none other than Joseph Merrick, commonly known as The Elephant Man, in a fresh retelling of his tale.
It’s worth mentioning that this latest adaptation isn’t a retelling of the earlier film. On the contrary, it’s adapted from Bernard Pomerance’s play, with Moby Pomerance penning the screenplay. While both the play and David Lynch’s movie share the same title, they tell distinct stories. In fact, the legal team behind the play once contemplated taking action against the production company of “The Elephant Man” for using the title.
In contrast to previous portrayals of Merrick by actors using prosthetics, Pearson is the first individual with a genuine facial abnormality to take on this role. John Hurt, for instance, played the lead in the Lynch film, while Mark Hamill and David Bowie have performed it on stage with the aid of makeup.
In a statement issued recently, Pearson expressed his feelings about assuming the role: ‘Joseph Merrick is an individual with whom I have had a lengthy and intricate history.’ He continued, ‘From seeing his name used as an insult to discovering the man through documentaries I’ve hosted, it has been a therapeutic process of developing admiration and respect for someone I once shied away from even contemplating as a child. Now, as an advocate for people with disabilities and an actor, there is no greater privilege (yet weightier responsibility) than to portray the authentic tale of Joseph Carey Merrick.’
In my perspective as a devoted admirer, the upcoming movie will be brought to life by Stephen Nemeth for Rhino Films and Eve Pomerance for Major Motion Pictures. Eve, being the daughter of Bernard Pomerance, has also shared her thoughts with Variety. As she stated, “My father never favored the use of prosthetics on stage because he believed it detached the audience from the narrative.” He wanted the spectators to fully empathize with Merrick, recognizing themselves in him. Lines like, ‘I am not an animal, I am a man’ which have come to symbolize the play, will carry even more weight with Adam narrating this tale and allowing the audience to truly walk in Merrick’s footsteps. Indeed, my father would be ecstatic to witness his vision coming true.
Adam Pearson Has Spoken About Being Called ‘Elephant Man’ Before
It’s no wonder that Adam Pearson, known for his fierce advocacy against ableism, has a complex connection with the spirit of Joseph Merrick. In 2024, he shared in an interview with a magazine about how he felt demeaned when he was referred to as “The Elephant Man” during his school years.
He shared that whenever The Elephant Man or another similar character was on television, he’d overhear that nickname the next day. Taking a deep breath before entering through the gates, he’d try to endure it. However, he also admitted to People magazine that his disability has actually opened more opportunities than it’s limited. Here’s hoping The Elephant Man will be the start of an exciting new chapter in his career.
