The death toll continues to rise following the roof collapse of a Dominican Republic nightclub.
As a lifestyle expert, I’m deeply saddened to share that among the 113 souls lost following the devastating incident at Santo Domingo’s Jet Set Club, was the renowned merengue singer, Rubby Pérez. On the fateful morning of April 8, while he was gracefully performing onstage, tragedy struck as the roof collapsed. His team confirmed the unfortunate news, leaving us all in mourning. Rubby Pérez was a vibrant spirit at 69 years old.
The message on Rubby’s Instagram on April 9 expressed heartfelt gratitude for the love, support, and solidarity during a tough time for his family, friends, and fans. His music and kindness will remain deeply cherished within us. May his spirit rest in peace.
In a press conference before making an official announcement, Juan Manuel Méndez, head of the Emergency Operations Center, revealed that rescue workers had extracted the body of the singer known for “Tu Vas a Volar” from the debris.
In the course of the ongoing rescue efforts, over 155 individuals were transported to local hospitals due to their injuries. Amidst this, Ruby’s daughter, Zulinka Pérez, offered a glimpse into the immediate aftermath when the roof collapsed.
At a recent press conference,” Zulinka shared with local media in Spanish, “my husband and I are both backup singers for him. During an unfortunate incident, my husband shielded me, falling on top of me, and became trapped. He urged me to leave quickly. Fortunately, the musicians managed to escape, but our bass player is currently in critical condition after undergoing surgery, and one of our saxophone players has tragically passed away.
Besides them, other victims were former Major League Baseball stars Octavio Dotel and Tony Enrique Blanco Cabrera, as well as Monte Cristi governor Nelsy Cruz. Dan Horwits, Dotel’s representative, shared thoughts on his client’s life while verifying the sad news of his passing.
His enthusiasm, joy, and love for life were contagious to those fortunate enough to know him, Horowits expressed in a post on April 8. It was a privilege to stand for OD. We extend our thoughts and prayers to his entire family, as well as everyone touched by this tragedy.
After the unfortunate incident that took place at approximately 1 a.m., I couldn’t help but be on pins and needles, eagerly awaiting updates from the nightclub itself. True to form, they released their own statement following the collapse.
Deep sadness and sympathy envelop us as we learn about the loss of precious lives. In these challenging times, our thoughts and prayers go out to every family impacted. We feel their pain intimately, for we too are grieving. We’re cooperating closely with the relevant authorities to help the victims and understand the circumstances.
