In a new development that adds to a series of frustrations for fans of Disco Elysium, widely recognized as one of the most brilliantly crafted games, the developers at ZA/UM plan to redesign the game specifically for mobile devices, aiming to captivate users who are active on platforms like TikTok.
Instead of trying to appeal to TikTok users by offering brief snippets of intriguing narrative, artwork, and sound, Denis Havel, head of ZA/UM studio, suggested a new approach that strays from the essence of why Disco Elysium is cherished. This fresh concept aims to create a unique, immersive form of entertainment that might resonate with TikTok users, but it seems to deviate from the game’s original slow-paced, in-depth storytelling style.
Though the final outcome might be delightful, it’s hard for us to fathom enjoying one of our cherished and favorite games in a mobile version or as brief bursts tailored for today’s social media enthusiasts. It’s almost ironic (and funny) that the creators could end up embodying the very thing their game so skillfully criticized.
Are we mistaken about this? Would you rather have your immersive, thoughtful role-playing encounters delivered in brief moments on your mobile device? Unfortunately, it appears that the machine – a machine of pain and indignity – is starting up once more, suggesting our struggle may never end.
