These movies are highly recommended for any sci-fi enthusiasts eagerly seeking quality cinematic experiences.

Paramount+ continues to be the primary destination for all things “Star Trek,” featuring the latest series such as “Star Trek: Discovery,” “Strange New Worlds,” “Picard,” and “Lower Decks.” Although it’s recognized for various other franchises, its association with “Star Trek” is undoubtedly the most iconic in the realm of science fiction. Here you will find ten additional movies to explore during your “Star Trek” marathons.

1) Annihilation (2018)

In a chilling blend of science fiction and terror, the movie “Annihilation” unfolds, featuring mutating vegetation and creatures. The narrative focuses on Lena (played by Natalie Portman), who is both a cellular biology professor and a U.S. Army soldier. Her mission takes her into the enigmatic zone, often referred to as the Shimmer, which has expanded significantly over the past three years. Previously, only Lena’s husband had survived ventures into this mysterious area, but his health deteriorates rapidly, driving Lena to search for a cure. Despite not setting record-breaking box office numbers, “Annihilation” garnered positive reviews due to its talented cast and intriguing storyline, earning appreciation from both critics and viewers alike.

In addition to Natalie Portman, Annihilation features an outstanding cast that includes Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny, Oscar Isaac, Benedict Wong, Sonoya Mizuno, and David Gyasi.

2) Interstellar (2014)

Immediately, the movie “Interstellar” carries the distinctive style that’s characteristic of Christopher Nolan’s films. The story unfolds in a grim future where Earth is deteriorating and humanity is struggling. In an attempt to find a new home for mankind, a group unites to journey through a nearby wormhole to distant galaxies. Leaving behind their loved ones, they venture into the unknown with the hope of discovering the ideal planet for the 5000 embryos they transport. As expected, challenges crop up to jeopardize their mission, while the characters grapple with insurmountable difficulties and reminisce about their pasts. “Interstellar” was a blockbuster success and is widely acclaimed as a visually breathtaking masterpiece. Furthermore, scientists have much to discuss regarding the film’s scientific accuracy.

The movie “Interstellar” was jointly scripted by the Nolans, specifically Christopher and Jonathan, and boasts a large collection of talented actors. Among these are Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, and Michael Caine.

3) Looper (2012)

A sci-fi list would be incomplete without including at least one movie about time travel, and that’s where the film Looper comes in. This movie blends the future with the present in an intriguing way. In the year 2074, it becomes almost impossible to dispose of a body without leaving traces. As a result, professional assassins, known as loopers, send their victims back in time instead. They collaborate with a team from 2044 who carry out the assignments and clean up the mess. However, the 2044 agents are unaware that if they manage to survive until 2074, they’ll be sent back in time to be eliminated, just like their previous victims. Looper is an action-packed movie with a novel concept, offering two skilled actors the chance to portray different aspects of the same character. Critics and audiences alike have praised its thought-provoking plot.

On July 1, the movie Looper will be available for streaming once more, featuring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Noah Segan, and Piper Perabo in its cast.

4) Minority Report (2002)

In essence, “Minority Report” is a blend of cyberpunk action, infused with a touch of noir atmosphere, all set in a future brimming with advanced technology. The narrative revolves around the Precrime Department, a police unit that employs psychics to foresee crimes before they occur. This predictive ability allows them to prevent harm by apprehending potential offenders before they cause damage. However, things take an unexpected turn when John Anderton (played by Tom Cruise), the Precrime Chief, becomes the predicted perpetrator of a murder. “Minority Report” skillfully sparks moral and ethical discussions while offering a captivating mystery-filled film experience.

The movie “Minority Report” is a production by Steven Spielberg, adapted from Philip K. Dick’s novella with the same title. It features an impressive cast including Max von Sydow, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Neal McDonough, Patrick Kilpatrick, Michael Dickman, Matthew Dickman, and Lois Smith.

5) Arrival (2016)

As a movie enthusiast who appreciates thought-provoking science fiction films, I can’t help but sing praises for “Arrival.” This cinematic masterpiece is loosely based on Ted Chiang’s captivating short story, “Story of Your Life.” In essence, it chronicles the first encounter between humans and extraterrestrials. I, as a linguist portrayed by Amy Adams, am called upon to bridge the communication gap with these mysterious visitors, aiming to avoid the disastrous outcomes often depicted in sci-fi movies.

It’s interesting to note that I’m not alone in my task, as other countries are also attempting to decipher the alien language, evidenced by their diverse responses to what appears to be a “weapon” or a “tool.” For all you sci-fi aficionados out there, especially those intrigued by unique interpretations of first contact, “Arrival” is an absolute must-watch.

Arrival also stars Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

6) Total Recall (1990)

The movie titled “Total Recall” is another story from Philip K. Dick, where a construction worker seeks excitement by getting artificial memories implanted at Rekall. However, something goes awry, leading him to realize that his entire life was a fabrication and some dangerous individuals are after him. This movie has significantly influenced the development of sci-fi and action films today.

In a different wording, the movie “Total Recall” features Arnold Schwarzenegger, Rachel Ticotin, Sharon Stone, Ronny Cox, Michael Ironside, among several other stars.

7) The Running Man (1987)

Speaking of Arnold Schwarzenegger, let me share with you another one of his iconic sci-fi films – The Running Man. This movie was adapted from a novel by Stephen King and takes place in the late 2010s, which feels quite uncanny since it’s now our past. In this world, criminals are given a chance to escape death by running for their lives. Our protagonist, Ben Richards, portrayed by Schwarzenegger, finds himself framed and thrust onto the show where he must fight tooth and nail just to stay alive. However, it’s clear that the killers hired for the show have no intention of letting him survive.

The Running Man also stars María Conchita Alonso, Richard Dawson, Yaphet Kotto, and Jesse Ventura.

8) Transformers (2007)

You can stream all seven contemporary Transformers movies on Paramount+, starting with the original Transformers film. This is a Michael Bay production that boasts an intricate sci-fi narrative, driven by the ongoing struggle between Autobots and Decepticons across various planets. The story unfolds when Sam Witwicky (played by Shia LaBeouf) unknowingly purchases Bumblebee, believing it to be a used car. However, this seemingly innocuous event sets off a chain of events that draw him into the conflict as the hunt for the AllSpark intensifies. While some critics have given mixed reviews to Transformers, particularly in later installments, if you’re looking for an entertaining action movie to unwind with, Transformers could be just what you need.

In addition to Mark Wahlberg, the movie “Transformers” features acting talents such as Tyrese Gibson, Josh Duhamel, Anthony Anderson, Megan Fox, Rachael Taylor, John Turturro, and Jon Voight. The voices behind the film’s colossal robots are provided by Peter Cullen and Hugo Weaving.

9) Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Fans of Transformers have the advantage of having all their modern movies readily available, whereas Terminator enthusiasts can only access a more limited collection. Currently, Paramount+ offers Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Terminator: Genisys, and Terminator: Dark Fate for binge-watching. The plot revolves around two Terminators being sent back in time, with one assigned to hunt down and eliminate John Connor (Edward Furlong), while the other is tasked with safeguarding the future leader of the resistance. Naturally, reactions among fans differ for each film within this franchise, but generally, Terminator 2: Judgement Day is widely regarded as the best in the series, making it a must-see (or revisit).

10) War of the Worlds (2005)

Throughout the years, there have been several adaptations of “War of the Worlds”, one notable example being the 2005 remake of this timeless tale. The story is drawn from H.G. Wells’ novel by the same name and directed by Steven Spielberg. This narrative chronicles a family’s frantic efforts to survive during an annihilating alien attack. Such stories often linger in our thoughts, so it’s worthwhile for those who haven’t experienced it (either through reading or watching) to give it a try. It holds the distinction of being a sci-fi classic for good reason.

In this version, the main cast includes Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, Miranda Otto, and Tim Robbins. Notably, Morgan Freeman serves as the story’s narrator.
