2024 was a Marvel-less year for me, as Chris Hemsworth, but I remained quite busy. The action-packed “Transformers One” and the post-apocalyptic epic “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” were two standout films that showcased my versatility as an actor. In particular, my portrayal of Dementus in “Furiosa” was exceptional, arguably surpassing my performances within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It’s fascinating to see how I’ve flourished outside the MCU since joining the A-list back in 2011. Even before that, I had a significant yet understated role in the lesser-known thriller “A Perfect Getaway.” There have been some missteps along the way, such as “Red Dawn,” “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” and “Men in Black: International,” but overall, I’ve been fortunate to be part of more successful projects than disappointments.
Here are several movies starring Chris Hemsworth that every Thor fan should consider watching at least once. Unfortunately, Michael Mann’s “Blackhat,” “In the Heart of the Sea,” and both “Extraction” films didn’t make the list. Despite some surrounding lackluster films, his performances in 2015’s “Vacation” and 2016’s “Ghostbusters” were truly exceptional.
The Cabin in the Woods
Drew Goddard’s remarkable first film, titled “The Cabin in the Woods“, struggled to make it to cinemas due to MGM’s financial troubles during that period. However, those fortunate enough to catch it on the big screen were rewarded with a delightful experience, considering the trailers may not have effectively marketed the movie. The term “arguably” is used here because the trailers were intentionally designed as they should have been.
The movie titled “The Cabin in the Woods” is filled with unexpected plot twists that were better kept secret by the advertising. It’s not just a typical horror film; it delves deeper, exploring the elements that make horror movies effective. The tropes, the sudden frightening moments, they are all meticulously analyzed. Even characters like Chris Hemsworth’s Curt Vaughan, who seems to be the stereotypical “Athlete,” prove to be more complex than they initially appear, contrasting sharply with characters like Travis Van Winkle’s Trent Sullivan in the 2009 version of “Friday the 13th.
Rush
The collaboration between Hemsworth and director Ron Howard on the film “Rush” appears to have been fruitful, as the renowned director cast Hemsworth in his following project, “In the Heart of the Sea.” While both films are decent, “Rush” outshines “Heart,” with certain parts of the latter feeling sluggish. In contrast, “Rush,” which tells the story of Formula One drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda, provides a thrilling jolt, almost like an adrenaline shot to the arm.
To put it simply, “Rush” isn’t like the high-octane “Fast and Furious” series, where action scenes dominate. Instead, it delves deeply into the characters, with thrilling racing sequences woven in. Chris Hemsworth is excellent as Hunt, but Daniel Brühl steals the show right up to the end. It’s unfortunate that “Rush” was overlooked by many when it played in U.S. cinemas, as it offers a fantastic big-screen experience. “Rush” stands out as one of Ron Howard’s best films in recent years, making it an ideal pairing with “Apollo 13” for a double feature night.
Bad Times at the El Royale
As a cinephile, I recently found myself captivated by Drew Goddard’s latest directorial effort, “Bad Times at the El Royale“. Despite being packed with an impressive ensemble cast, it was Chris Hemsworth who truly shone during his limited screen time within the film’s sprawling 2.5-hour runtime. The movie boasts a number of clever twists and a meticulously crafted 60s aesthetic, making for a delightful viewing experience, despite its substantial time commitment.
Essentially, the movie “Bad Times at the El Royale” primarily revolves around five characters who spend a night at a hotel located on the California-Nevada border. Although their stories are not directly connected initially, they all harbor secrets that eventually intertwine by the end of the film. Notable performances come from Jeff Bridges and Cynthia Erivo, as well as the pairing of Dakota Johnson and Cailee Spaeny. However, it’s Lewis Pullman who stands out as the nervous hotel manager Miles Miller. This role is later overshadowed by Chris Hemsworth’s portrayal of a charismatic yet potentially dangerous cult leader, Billy Lee. The film skillfully tackles several themes during its runtime, and while it may seem slightly overcrowded at times, its creative vision never overpowers the narrative.
