Elizabeth Olsen has solidified herself as one of today’s most gifted actors, with her current success stemming from numerous outstanding acting displays. While she is primarily recognized for her remarkable portrayal of Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since making her debut in 2014’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” and being credited in 2015’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” Olsen has compiled an impressive body of work beyond the widely acclaimed superhero series. The Emmy-nominated actress from “WandaVision” boasts a collection of lesser-known projects showcasing some of her finest career performances, making it worthwhile for fans of her MCU appearances to explore other notable roles she has taken on.
The following Elizabeth Olsen projects feature her best roles outside of the MCU.
Love & Death
In the 2023 television series “Love & Death” produced by Max, Olsen played Candy Montgomery, a real-life woman who stood accused of murdering the wife of her lover. This series unfolds in Wylie, Texas during the 1980s and recounts the chain of events leading up to the axe murder, as well as Candy’s contentious trial that ultimately resulted in her acquittal. Despite her acclaimed portrayal of Candy, Olsen was surprisingly overlooked for an Emmy Award in 2023 but received a nomination for a Golden Globe in 2024.
The narrative structure of “Love & Death” revolves around the doubtful innocence of Candy, with Olsen’s powerful performance adding depth to this ambiguity. By convincingly depicting Candy’s genuine charm alongside her imperfections, both before and after the event, Olsen brings a touch of humanity to the series’ central figure. This authentic portrayal elevates “Love & Death” from an ordinary true crime tale to a compelling dramatization of a tragic and gruesome death, involving the complex characters involved in the incident.
Martha Marcy May Marlene
The 2011 film titled “Martha Marcy May Marlene” tells the tale of a young woman named Martha, played by Olsen, who is trying to heal after living in a cult for two years. In the movie, we witness her battle to break free from the terrible trauma inflicted upon her by the cult members. The story unfolds through flashbacks and the present day, showing Martha’s escape and the efforts of her former associates to lure her back into their fold.
In her first major film role, Olsen delivers an exceptional, groundbreaking performance in “Martha Marcy May Marlene.” Skillfully tackling the complex themes of the movie, the actress offers a gripping portrayal of the mental distress experienced by someone trapped in a cult. Through her character Martha’s struggles to adjust to everyday life while facing obstacles and lingering trauma, Olsen convincingly expresses the internal turmoil faced by the character, demonstrating her psychological struggle with sensitivity and intensity.
Ingrid Goes West
2017 saw Olsen delivering a standout performance that was both intelligent and amusing alongside Aubrey Plaza in the film “Ingrid Goes West.” In this movie, Olsen portrayed Taylor Sloane, a popular social media personality who captivates Plaza’s character, Ingrid Thorburn, following their encounter in Los Angeles. The film offers a comical critique of celebrity worship, as Ingrid’s unhealthy fascination escalates from admiration to obsession, ultimately leading to madness.
Ingrid Goes West showcases Olsen’s knack for portraying the superficial and careless demeanor often found among social media influencers. Her performance in the film is naturally humorous, yet it also perfectly complements Plaza’s complex character. Olsen’s act adds the necessary humor to counterbalance the movie’s darker undertones. Through her portrayal of Taylor, Olsen effectively emphasizes the significance of authenticity amidst fame and popularity.
Wind River
2017’s “Wind River” is a film I hold in high regard for its poignant and timeless narrative. As a Fish and Wildlife Service officer, I found myself immersed in the story when I came across the body of a young woman on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming. My character, Cory Lambert, teamed up with FBI agent Jane Banner, portrayed by Elizabeth Olsen, to unravel this tragic mystery.
In Wind River, I played a role that shed light on the heartbreaking reality of missing and murdered indigenous women in America. Through my organic portrayal of intelligence and determination, my character sought to uncover the truth about the murder. Surprisingly, the movie’s deep emphasis on character development gave Jane an extra dimension, and my emotional performance brought depth to her role within the film.
His Three Daughters
In 2023, Olsen’s latest film titled “His Three Daughters” was met with widespread acclaim. The story revolves around Christina, portrayed by Olsen herself, Katie played by Carrie Coon, and Rachel, acted by Natasha Lyonne – three sisters who come together once more to nurse their ailing father in his last days. The film centers on the sisters’ strained past and their attempts to reconcile their differences and mend their relationships.
In the movie “His Three Daughters,” Olsen masterfully portrays her character, skillfully navigating the intricate relationships depicted in the film. The storyline, though somber at times, is enlivened by a touch of humor. With her extensive experience in comedy, Olsen delivers sharp wit throughout the script of “His Three Daughters.” One of the film’s strengths lies in its actors’ ability to support each other, and Olsen holds her own alongside Coon and Lyonne.
All of these titles are available to rent, purchase, or stream on various platforms.
