With a sequel on the horizon, Game Freak and The Pokemon Company have an excellent chance to build upon their new approach. Interestingly, Pokemon Legends: Z-A draws inspiration from Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, centering around Lumiose City. Some are concerned, however, that the game might be set entirely within a city without any additional diverse environments.
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, it’s been confirmed that the storyline revolves around Lumiose City and its urban renewal project. This could imply a variety of regions and ecosystems will be featured, as players are expected to help integrate these into Lumiose City. Here are some biomes I’m particularly excited to see in Pokemon Legends: Z-A.
Grassland
Skip over the usual, vast, untouched meadows. Instead, imagine the landscapes in Pokémon Legends: Z-A as ever-changing spaces. This area mirrors Lumiose City’s extensive growth and development. Wide, open fields with wildflowers and tall patches of grass stretching to the horizon create an ideal beginning for new adventurers. It’s a habitat where you could come across a group of Tauros grazing near construction sites or flocks of Pidgey rising from the tall grass.
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the setting won’t remain stationary; instead, it could develop over the course of the story. This area symbolically represents the encroachment of civilization into the wilderness, which is a key theme in the game. To achieve this, the region should strive for a harmonious blend of human development and natural beauty, creating an impression of a dynamic ecosystem. Here, fierce battles between various species might occur as they vie for territory amidst mankind’s encroachment. The open grasslands stand as a testament to the untouched nature that once thrived before Lumiose City expanded.
River
In the game of Pokemon X and Y, Luminous City is graced with a river running right through it, separating the North and South Boulevards. However, this river should not merely serve as an aesthetically pleasing water feature; instead, it should be transformed into a vibrant ecosystem, teeming with various habitats. In the upper regions of the river, you could come across fast-paced, turbulent sections that challenge your abilities while riding on Pokémon like Basculegion. Conversely, in the gentler, serene parts of the river, you may discover water Pokémon who thrive in a leisurely lifestyle, such as Lotad along the banks.
As you move further along the river, it might grow deeper, making it ideal for fishing and home to Pokémon like Goldeen and Barboach. This part of the river could offer a vital fishing mechanic. Additionally, this waterway could be a site of exploration, with hidden treasures that shift with the current’s flow, offering insights into its impact on Lumiose City’s growth, and serving as a significant travel route for the player to reach different locations swiftly.
Gardens
To make Lumiose City truly captivating, it’s not enough to just have a pleasant strolling spot; we should transform it into a showcase of diverse gardens reflecting its vibrant culture. Envision a grand, formal garden, expertly maintained and nurturing various Grass Pokemon. Visualize rooftop gardens and terraces teeming with flying and Bug Pokemon feasting on fresh berries. The natural spaces could be seamlessly integrated into Pokemon Legends: Z-A, enhancing the city’s allure.
In this game scenario, the player might receive their own little garden, where its condition evolves as the game unfolds based on the player’s care. By cultivating different types of berry trees and exotic plants, the appearance of the garden can change, but more importantly, it could attract various Pokemon species. Enhancing these gardening features in Pokemon Legends: Arceus by adding customization options would be a fantastic improvement.
Forest
In the fictional world of Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the forest biome ought to transcend ordinary tree clusters, instead embodying the essence of an age-old, pristine sanctuary. The landscape should be characterized by colossal trees casting shadows over sunlight and winding paths that challenge explorers, emphasizing the raw, untamed spirit of this region. This place remains unspoiled by urban development, thereby maintaining an aura of enigma and fascination.
In this thickly wooded region, you’ll encounter Grass and Bug-type Pokémon among the lush vegetation during the day. As night falls, Ghost Pokémon emerge, particularly in the heart of the forest. This vast woodland is a treasure trove for discovering rare Pokemon, valuable items, and exotic plants that can be cultivated in your garden back in Lumiose City. This forest will serve as a peaceful escape from urban life, providing access to a variety of Pokémon not found within the city borders.
Underground Caves
As a dedicated gamer, I’d love to share an idea for Pokemon Legends: Z-A that could take our experience to the next level. Imagine if we had an expansive underground cave system beneath the city and surrounding regions!
This intricate network would serve not only as a haven for various Pokémon, but also as a treasure trove for mining materials. These minerals could be used to further develop the crafting system, much like in Pokemon Legends: Arceus. The caves could house diverse areas, such as chambers filled with shimmering crystals or even passages with molten lava flowing through them!
This vast subterranean world would not only provide a fresh and exciting adventure but also offer new possibilities for strategic gameplay and resource collection. Let’s make Pokemon Legends: Z-A an unforgettable journey!
Adventurers might accidentally find themselves exploring these caverns, encountering Noibat suspended from the roofs or Onix gliding through the shadows below. Game Freak may choose to expand upon the Underground as seen in both Pokemon Diamond and Pearl, utilizing the survival aspects that are more prominent in the Legends series. Hidden corridors could provide additional incentives for players to delve deeper into these caves, fostering a spirit of curiosity and determination.
Lake
A lake could be a fitting addition to Lumiose City, given that it’s already home to a flowing river. This new body of water would not only enrich the city’s landscape but also serve as a crucial source for the ongoing urban development project. The lake should boast a rich and varied ecosystem, with shallower regions as well as deeper ones, to support a wide variety of Water-type Pokemon. These creatures will vary in species across different zones within the lake.
In the heart of this lake, you’ll find bigger Pokémon species like Gyarados and Milotic. The shallower regions will be inhabited by smaller ones such as Psyduck and Buizel. Players can fish near the shoreline, but to catch the bigger fish in the center of the lake, they might need to swim or use a boat. Game Freak could also introduce a sanctuary or monument dedicated to the legendary Pokémon, Xerneas and Yveltal, in the lake’s center, which could play a part in the game’s narrative.
Swamp
In Pokemon games, swamplands often receive less focus compared to other environments. Introducing a swamp region in Pokemon Legends: Z-A could provide an interesting blend between the pristine beauty of nature and the man-made pollution caused by urban expansion. The natural aspects of this swamp would feature murky waters, towering trees covered in moss, and a wide variety of Bug and Poison-type Pokemon. However, the encroachment of the city could lead to the dumping of waste materials and pollutants into the swamp, impacting its ecosystem and influencing which Pokemon are present.
In this setting, instead of encountering Pokemon such as Croagunk, Venipede, or Wooper, you might find Grimer or Trubbish due to man-made pollutants in the swamp. What was once a harmless fog or mist in the swamp may now be a hazy pollution cloud. This scenario could lead to missions aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of urban development and allowing players to achieve a harmonious coexistence between nature and technology.
Mountain
In Pokemon games, mountains often serve as challenging end-level zones where powerful Pokemon reside. Adding a mountainous region to Pokemon Legends: Z-A would offer a late-game environment, acting as the climax for the urban development plan. This could involve a series of trials for players to conquer, a distinctive ecosystem teeming with strong Pokémon, and breathtaking vistas overlooking Lumiose City.
As a dedicated Pokémon enthusiast, I can’t help but imagine a world where towering cliffs become the majestic domains of mighty Pokémon like Garchomp, Rhydon, and Braviary. On the other hand, lower paths would be ideal habitats for resilient creatures such as Rockruff and Machop, who thrive in rough terrains. If the upcoming game Pokemon Legends: Z-A revives the dynamic weather system from Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, these mountains could serve as the ideal stage to showcase this exciting feature. The ever-changing weather could significantly alter the Pokémon present in these regions, as well as the challenges they pose.
Desert
In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, the desert shouldn’t stay stationary; instead, it should be a dynamic region of drifting dunes and intense heat. As the sands move, new pathways and concealed mysteries would emerge. Players might stumble upon ancient temple ruins that have lain hidden for ages or find an oasis offering respite. Sudden sandstorms could arise, disorienting players or compelling them to seek cover.
Pokémon such as Cacturne, Flygon, Sandile, and Bramblin seem perfectly suited to this region, highlighting the rich diversity possible in a desert environment. The dynamic terrain would require players to carefully search for every Pokémon residing within this ecosystem. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, exploration and preparation will be crucial elements of gameplay.
Winter Area
A wintry setting would be ideal for Pokemon Legends: Z-A, particularly if it includes weather elements. This could range from a consistently snowy mountain top or northern region, or perhaps temporary winter landscapes following a snowfall. Throughout the Pokemon series, icy areas have always been a staple, and their presence should be maintained here. Game Freak might also consider adding frozen caves and water features to enhance the gameplay experience.
Here, you’ll encounter Pokémon such as Froslass, Beartic, and Glaceon. Just like desert sandstorms, snowfall and hail could reduce visibility, hide secrets, and compel players to seek shelter. Game Freak might also incorporate weather effects akin to those in ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’ to intensify the survival elements.
