However, the most substantial discontinuity between two films, not only in terms of time but also in terms of the narrative, lies between part 4, Fast & Furious (2009), and the first movie in the franchise, The Fast and the Furious (2001).

This melancholic ambiance is contrasted sharply by a series of seemingly unrelated yet insightful exchanges, which manage to fill in some blanks within the narrative. The story introduces us to a man named Santos, who assists Dom in securing the release of another character, Leo, from prison.

Prior to the events of the jailbreak, the story begins with Han making his entrance in the Dominican Republic, where he reconnects with his old friend Dom. Although Han had been previously presented in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, this marks their initial on-screen encounter. After a discussion with a local figure who appears to imply that Dom is free to manage an illegal enterprise if he so chooses, Letty subsequently joins him. It’s later disclosed that Letty had managed to locate Dom following his apparent disappearance. The remainder of the brief film consists of various scenes depicting their activities throughout a single day.

Crucially, “Los Bandoleros” provides us with the backstory on how Dom became acquainted with Leo and Santos, who reappear throughout the franchise but are particularly significant in “Fast Five.” Furthermore, during a discussion with a woman, Han reveals important details about their past encounter, which explains why they know each other not only in “Los Bandoleros” but also in “Fast Five.

In essence, the spin-off film “Los Bandoleros” provides clarity where “Fast & Furious” begins somewhat confusingly, filling in key gaps from previous installments such as “The Fast and the Furious“. The short movie addresses two main questions: first, it reveals how Dom and Letty are united at the start of “Fast & Furious“, and second, it explains their presence in the Dominican Republic.
