The popular games Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet & Clank have influenced the creation of an upcoming PS5 indie game titled Ruffy and the Riverside. This innovative title lets players modify the game world by duplicating and relocating textures, a feature demonstrated in the trailer available above. Mark your calendars for the game’s release on June 26th, 2025.
Presented as a lively animated character, you’ll join Ruffy in his adventures, engaging in combat, soaring, running, and leaping while switching backgrounds to solve challenges and vanquish foes. According to Art Director Patrick Ruckdeschel, the main character, Ruffy, is on a mission to recover the six golden letters. “Ruffy must untangle age-old enigmas, participate in skating competitions, and bring sunken islands back to the water’s surface. As you journey through different places, there will be new areas to discover. You can even leap into walls and solve puzzles in 2D stages.

In order to establish the unique art style, the developer meticulously sketched every detail by hand, dedicating an impressive 600 drawings solely to the main character. You might wonder why so many? Well, each action of this character was drawn from eight different angles. Given that it took seven years to bring this vibrant, colorful world to life, we’re confident you’ll enjoy your journey through it!
Speaking about where the influence of vintage PlayStations is evident, Ruckdeschel notes that the design of Ruffy and the Riverside is shaped by the team’s nostalgic memories. “We have poured a lot of heart into Ruffy and the Riverside, and working on it for PlayStation feels like a cherished dream to us. We spent our childhood playing games like Crash Bandicoot and Ratchet & Clank, and you can definitely sense those familiar tones in Ruffy and the Riverside.
