Discover the Origin of ‘Rogue One’s Most Iconic Line in ‘Andor’ Season 2

In the 2016 movie “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” the tale of Cassian Andor reaches its finale, yet his influence and unwavering commitment to galactic freedom continued through the Rebellion. However, Cassian’s journey didn’t end there; the Disney+ series “Andor” explores his life in the years preceding the events of “Rogue One,” depicting how he became a crucial figure within the Rebellion and played a significant role in the destruction of the Death Star. The first season of “Andor” was acclaimed as a classic by both fans and critics. The second season, premiered on April 22, has received the same praise, cementing the series as one of the most tension-filled and emotionally impactful tales from the early days of the Galactic Civil War.

In Episode 8 of Season 2, entitled “Who Are You?”, we find Cassian Andor entangled in the Ghorman Massacre – a fateful incident that eventually prompted Senator Mon Mothma’s condemnation of the Emperor and the formation of the united Rebel Alliance. It is within this pivotal moment across the galaxy that the background story of one of Cassian’s influential phrases to Jyn Erso from Rogue One unfolds.

A Young Bellhop on Ghorman Laid the Bricks for the Rebellion Without Knowing It

Previously in Season 2, Cassian (played by Diego Luna) was dispatched to the planet Ghorman to assess whether the local rebels were prepared for a full-scale uprising against the Imperial regime’s oppressive presence. It is later uncovered within the Imperial Security Bureau (ISB) that the Empire had been orchestrating a 12-month operation aimed at inciting the rebels into open rebellion, providing the ISB an excuse to launch a devastating attack on the populace and seize control of Ghorman’s valuable mines. The mines on Ghorman are the sole source for obtaining the necessary raw materials required for constructing components for the Death Star.

During his initial undercover mission on Ghorman, posing as fashion designer Varian Skye, Cassian converses with a young bellhop named Thela (portrayed by Stefan Crepon). Thela shares that the central monument in town was rebuilt to honor the peaceful demonstrators who were brutally killed when Grand Moff Tarkin’s vessel refused to postpone its landing, an event that claimed the life of Thela’s father among others. Although Thela confesses he has never forgotten this tragic event and remains steadfast in his decision to stay on his home planet, Cassian and Thela tacitly acknowledge their shared identity as rebels.

A year after Cassian’s secretive return to Ghorman for a mission to kill ISB supervisor Dedra Meero, he encounters Thela again. In contrast to their previous meeting, the mood on Ghorman has grown tense, and Thela is more open about his beliefs as he converses with Cassian quietly. Interestingly, it’s revealed that Thela did not register “Varian Skye” as a guest during their earlier encounter. Although Cassian doesn’t disclose his true self or the connection to the broader rebellion, they both comprehend each other and the escalating conflict between the native Ghormans and the Imperials.

On the tragic day when a peaceful protest turned into a massacre, Cassian tells Thela that it’s unlikely he’ll return. In response, Thela expresses her optimism by saying, “Rebellions thrive on hope.

Cassian takes a brief pause to fully grasp Thela’s message and its significance. In this instant, it becomes clear to Cassian that the rebels on Ghorman will not be suppressed. He understands that they are not prepared for an immediate war against the Empire, as he had cautioned Luthen Rael a year ago. However, Thela’s powerful words reveal that the people of Ghorman would prefer death to continued oppression under tyranny.

Cassian’s feelings are deeply affected by Thela’s words for many years, and he echoes those very words to Jyn Erso when she first embarks on her rebellion path. Later, Jyn shares the same phrase with the rebel leaders to emphasize the significance of obtaining the Death Star plans.

The five words – “Rebellions are born from hope,” spoken by a courageous bellboy on the planet Ghorman, ultimately became the catalyst for the Rebel Alliance’s pivotal triumph against the Empire in the battle at Yavin.
