For tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) enthusiasts who are geographically dispersed, virtual tabletops have grown indispensable. They offer a digital platform to play games like Dungeons & Dragons and various other systems. A multitude of third-party tools are readily available for this purpose, and now, Wizards of the Coast has entered the scene with their web-based VTT, D&D Beyond Maps. That said, it’s not the only virtual offering from the team behind Dungeons & Dragons . While Maps is currently in its Beta stage, another virtual project called Project Sigil is undergoing alpha testing.
In September 2024, Project Sigil Alpha was unveiled, with Maps Beta launching only a month later. Given that there’s already a web-based virtual tabletop for D&D, many enthusiasts were eager to see what Project Sigil would bring. Although it shares similarities with a VTT, the D&D team is marketing Project Sigil as a “3D sandbox” and a more immersive extension of Maps. But, you might wonder, exactly what is Project Sigil?
Project Sigil was introduced in September 2024, a month before Maps Beta went live. Since there’s an existing web-based virtual tabletop game for D&D, fans were intrigued about what Project Sigil would offer. While it operates similarly to a VTT, the D&D team is promoting it as a “3D playground” and a more immersive addition to Maps. However, you might be asking, what exactly is Project Sigil?
During a recent tour of Wizards of the Coast, ComicBook was given a sneak peek at Project Sigil’s demo and had the chance to chat with one of its developers about the project. It’s evident that Project Sigil is currently undergoing significant changes as the team leans heavily on player input to refine its purpose, which is to create a 3D sandbox experience that resembles, yet falls short of being, a Virtual Tabletop (VTT).
Project Sigil Blends Tabletop and Video Game Elements to Give D&D Fans Another Tool
The development of Project Sigil is ongoing in its experimental stage (alpha testing), with a steadily increasing number of players joining in. As the team enlarges their playtesting group, they aim to gather more input from these players to further refine the project. Interestingly, it appears that the developers are following the players’ lead in shaping what Project Sigil becomes and how it might be utilized.
In the presentation, I was given an up-close glimpse of the astonishing capabilities of the 3D sandbox. This tool empowers players to construct intricate 3D map models with an array of predefined elements. The gaming ambiance is heightened by the integration of Unreal Engine, yet the construction grid retains a nostalgic tabletop role-playing game (TTRPG) flair. Upon completion, the maps can be enriched with 3D figurines representing monsters, player characters, and non-player characters. These miniatures are customizable, allowing players to swap out weapons as they gain new ones in their adventures. Moreover, Project Sigil offers a photo mode, enabling users to arrange miniatures and monsters for dramatic shots, reminiscent of cinematic scenes.
In Project Sigil, features like interactive spell and item animations, as well as a game board, contribute to a video game-like atmosphere. However, unlike a typical video game, not every event in a Dungeons & Dragons game is predetermined. You can physically roll 3D dice on the table, and having a character sheet remains essential to capture the finer details of character actions. While some basic spells may be triggered with a simple click, more intricate ones necessitate collaboration between the player and Dungeon Master.
Project Sigil offers a unique blend of features that sets it apart from traditional Virtual Tabletop (VTT) and video games. It’s more like a sandbox environment due to its animations, automated map responses, and customizability. For Dungeon Masters seeking to create an immersive 3D world for a climactic campaign encounter, Project Sigil provides the necessary tools. The design of each element is stunningly detailed and intricate, facilitating the construction of a captivating 3D environment. Additionally, its integration with D&D Beyond allows for effortless importation of character sheets and adventure assets. However, the precise purpose or application of Project Sigil can still be debated.
Unlike other browser-based Virtual Tabletop Systems (VTTs) such as Maps, Project Sigil has more stringent hardware requirements. Although it’s technically possible for everyone in your group to use Project Sigil simultaneously, it’s more probable that the Dungeon Master (DM) will project images on a screen or run it from their device while players watch a livestream and utilize pen-and-paper character sheets at home. While the maps are visually appealing, they may require extra time for the DM to prepare, making it less likely for many groups to conduct every session using a more labor-intensive system like Project Sigil.
Since Project Sigil is currently in its experimental stage (alpha phase), many of its features may undergo modifications in the future. If you’re eager to explore Project Sigil and contribute to shaping its development, keep an eye out for extended playtest invitations coming in February. Noteworthy mention: D&D Beyond Master Tier members will have priority access to the playtest, complete with multiplayer capabilities. Although a beta testing signup was initially announced, Project Sigil will remain in alpha for a while longer as more players join and provide feedback, ensuring a smoother experience when it transitions to the next phase.
