In the Krakoa Era, Cyclops, once a prominent figure and a long-standing leader among comics’ greatest, stepped out of the limelight as the head of the mutant race. Instead, he led the X-Men on the battlefield. However, his role as a leader for the mutant race was something he had held since before Scarlet Witch depowered them. The storyline “From the Ashes” has reshaped the X-Men, with Cyclops now leading a more militaristic team dedicated to protecting and providing aid to mutants. This new stance has put them in conflict with 3K, a group known for transforming adults into mutants. 3K has even produced their own version of the X-Men, and issue #17 of X-Men continues the battle between these two teams. As the confrontation unfolds, new mutant Schwarzchild wonders why someone like Cyclops, who possesses such formidable powers, is leading the X-Men. The following actions in the fight reveal to him exactly why.
The X-Men is a group comprised of Omega-level mutants, the strongest type of mutant. Leadership roles within the X-Men have often been held by Omegas, including figures such as Professor X, Storm, and Jean Grey. Although Cyclops possesses impressive powers, he isn’t quite on par with some other X-Men leaders in terms of power levels. Nevertheless, it’s not sheer power that makes a great leader, and Cyclops demonstrates why he has been the most effective leader among the X-Men.
Cyclops Is a Master of Tactics and That’s Made All the Difference
Among X-Men enthusiasts, there’s often debate about Cyclops’s power levels and capabilities. As a child, Cyclops and his brother Havok were in a plane crash, an incident that left him with an uncontrollable manifestation of his powers due to a brain injury. It was discovered that ruby quartz could contain his powers, leading him to wear his signature red visor and glasses. Unlike lasers, Cyclops’s power is concussive in nature, able to generate kinetic energy that, surprisingly, doesn’t push against his eyewear. There have been theories suggesting that his body houses portals to a dimension of kinetic energy, often referred to as the “punch dimension.” Despite these formidable powers, Cyclops is significantly limited compared to someone like Storm. The leader of 3K’s X-Men, Schwarzchild, a mutant with gravity control abilities, questions Cyclops’s power, but Cyclops acknowledges his limitations. However, he leads the team not because of his powers but due to his exceptional tactical skills.
The evidence clearly shows that the 3K X-Men have opponents whose abilities can match those of Cyclops’s X-Men. Initially, the 3K-Men had an advantage in the battle, but this was reversed when the conflict began due to Cyclops’s skills. Cyclops is highly adept at analyzing his adversaries and exploiting their weaknesses. He has a deep understanding of his team, which enables him to counter almost everything the 3K-Men can do. With years of experience under his belt, Cyclops has honed his group tactics and is capable of thinking on his feet with remarkable agility. Although Captain America is often considered the best tactician in the Marvel Universe, many argue that Cyclops surpasses him. The X-Men may not possess the same level of raw power as the Avengers, but they have defeated enemies whom the Avengers could not. Magneto, for example, typically outmatches the Avengers, but Cyclops uses his expertise and tactical acumen to overcome him. Despite not being the most powerful X-Man, Cyclops has proven himself worthy of leading the team, a position that Professor Xavier assigned to him primarily because he knew Cyclops would give his all to prove himself (and also due to fear that Cyclops might commit suicide, but they are related).
Cyclops Is the Best Leader in Comics
It’s not surprising at all that Cyclops is considered the best X-Men leader due to his strategic acumen; this is something that X-Men enthusiasts have known for quite some time, given that his tactical prowess is what typically places him in the leadership position. While powers are undeniably crucial for a superhero, Cyclops’s powers have often presented more challenges than benefits. Yet, it’s his ability to navigate these difficulties that has significantly contributed to his success as a leader.
Cyclops excels at positioning his adversaries and taking them all out. It’s no wonder that even the most talkative X-Men, such as Wolverine and Gambit, rely on Cyclops as their leader. Although his powers might not be the strongest, he consistently guides his team to success.
With an uncanny ability to position his enemies and knock them all out, it’s no surprise that even the most vocal X-Men, like Wolverine and Gambit, trust Cyclops as their commander. Despite not having the strongest powers, he consistently leads his team to victory.
