80’s crime drama “Bergerac” gets a contemporary update, as John Nettles steps aside for Damien Molony, who is known from the series “Brassic.

Initially, the detective is taking a leave of absence due to sympathy, after the loss of his wife. During this time, he’s been consuming alcohol excessively, a habit that has strained his relationship with his adolescent daughter.

However, upon the death of a well-known community figure, he is presented with a chance to rebuild his life.

If Bergerac manages to crack the case, it might prove he’s still up to the task of being an excellent father, hints the official synopsis. Thus, we find ourselves embroiled in a complex murder mystery that will leave viewers on the edge of their seats throughout the initial season.

In the original series, Jersey Island served as a significant player, almost equivalent to the show’s characters themselves, during filming.

Bergerac filming locations

The scenic beauty of Jersey was an essential part of Bergerac, so naturally, that’s where the actors and production team set base.

Writer Toby Whithouse stated that Jersey and Bergerac cannot be separated in any way, so if the setting were changed for the show, it would need to be an entirely new production.

Director Colm McCarthy reiterated similar thoughts: “Jersey, serving not only as a setting but also shaping the unique personality of Bergerac, plays a significant role in its character. Stripping the tale from Jersey would transform it into a completely different series.

“It’s what I see when I watch the show and when I read the scripts.”

House continued by characterizing Jersey as an “intriguing, peculiar, exceptionally stunning, and extremely inviting isle.

He noted that it’s distinctively unique, yet in a sense, it resembles an unusual affiliate state, which isn’t exactly like the United Kingdom and doesn’t aspire to be so either.

In Jersey, there are distinct traditions, laws, and regulations that set it apart. Its rich history also adds a unique flavor. As we aimed to shape and impact the narrative we were conveying, we had to carefully consider all these factors.

Much of Molony’s enthusiasm for this particular job stemmed from working in Jersey.

During our filming in Jersey, it was wonderful to encounter enthusiasts from the initial series approach us, expressing their enthusiasm about the series’ return to the island, according to him.

In the original show, many local residents seemed to be avid supporters of the artists, demonstrating the deep bond they shared with Bergerac.

I’m looking forward to including some delightful throwbacks and acknowledgements that honor the original work, which I believe will excite the fans greatly.

The actor remembered finding the sunrise in Bouley Bay particularly breathtaking as he filmed there at 4 am.

“The early wake-up call was worth it!” he added.

Another location showcased in the series is St Ouen’s Bay, situated on the western coast of the island.

He went on, describing it as a vast, breezy coastline teeming with surfers. This setting served as an ideal canvas for a dramatic scene in episode 1, where Jim chose to quit alcohol and dedicate himself fully to his work again. Consequently, the scene was somber and foreboding, perfectly complemented by the weather.

For the very first time since filming just one episode for the initial series back in the early ’90s, actor Philip Glenister, portraying businessman Arthur Wakefield, found himself back on the island of Jersey, as his character’s daughter-in-law had been murdered.

As a movie buff, I found it incredibly intriguing to shoot scenes amidst the bustling public backdrop, be it a lively wedding procession, a spirited hen party, or any everyday spectacle in between.

The residents appeared genuinely happy to see us, and I enjoyed engaging in friendly conversations with them during breaks.

Glenister additionally expressed his comprehension as to why the series’ originator, Robert Banks Stewart, decided to base the narrative in Jersey.

Initially, he noted that the island is exceptionally pleasing to the sight. Its coastal regions are breathtakingly beautiful, yet there’s also a somber past associated with it.
