Over the past decade since her breakout role in Martin Scorsese’s “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2013), Margot Robbie has ascended to A-list status with remarkable speed. Her filmography spans films with substantial budgets and those on a shoestring, encompassing almost every genre imaginable. This diverse body of work is truly impressive, and regardless of whether she’s the lead or part of an ensemble cast, Robbie consistently captures attention. Few movies featuring Margot Robbie have failed to garner some level of critical acclaim. Even when the film itself doesn’t receive numerous accolades, her performance is often singled out as a redeeming aspect.
Among Robbie’s films, the following are some must-watches for fans. Unfortunately, Focus, Z for Zachariah, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, Goodbye Christopher Robin, Mary Queen of Scots, Babylon, and About Time narrowly missed making the list.
Asteroid City
Just as it’s customary in Hollywood for filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock or Steven Spielberg to collaborate with specific actors, it’s also traditional to work with Wes Anderson. He often prefers working with familiar faces such as Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston, Adrien Brody, and others. However, his cast lists are diverse enough to welcome some fresh talents from the Wes Anderson universe too.
In the movie titled “Asteroid City“, we find actors like Tom Hanks, Maya Hawke, Steve Carell, Matt Dillon, and Robbie. However, Robbie’s role is relatively small in the film, as she appears only in a few scenes, portraying the late wife of Schwartzman’s character, Augie Steenbeck. The actress who plays this deceased wife remains unspecified in the given context.

Barbie
Barbie, which is part of the Barbenheimer phenomenon’s prosperous side, initially sparked surprise upon its announcement but eventually became not just a hit in terms of both critical acclaim and box office numbers, but also a significant film. Some might argue that Margot Robbie, who produced this movie as well, deserves most of the credit for its success.
As a passionate cinephile, I find myself pondering the enigma behind the omission of Robbie from the Best Actress category and Greta Gerwig in Best Director, at this year’s Academy Awards. Both delivered exceptional performances and direction that left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape. The film was a cultural milestone and, despite potential sequels, its significance as a unique event remains unshaken in our collective memory.

The Big Short
In the movie “The Big Short,” Robbie’s screen time is as limited as her part in “Asteroid City,” but it’s both significant and enjoyable. To make finance, a subject that can be quite intricate, more engaging for viewers, they cleverly used Robbie to explain mortgage bonds while soaking in a bubble bath.
The strategy of casting Robbie was a genius move, serving as one example of how The Big Short aimed to engage and retain viewers. Despite the complex subject matter, writer/director Adam McKay and co-writer Charles Randolph cleverly managed to make the narrative engaging.

Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)
As a follower, I found myself caught in a double whammy that affected the box office performance of Birds of Prey. Firstly, the looming uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic instilled a fear that kept many potential viewers away from theaters. Secondly, being part of the DC Extended Universe, which was rapidly losing momentum, may have also played a role in its less-than-expected success at the box office.
This movie was unfortunate, given that it’s likely the most outstanding film in the deceased cinematic universe featuring “The Suicide Squad.” It’s a delight to watch multiple times, offering an enjoyable viewing experience. Notably, it spotlights the best aspects of “Suicide Squad,” particularly Robbie’s portrayal of Harley Quinn, who steals the show. However, Robbie, as producer, isn’t the only one delivering a standout performance; Jurnee Smollett, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Messina, and Ewan McGregor all shine brightly in their roles.

Bombshell
The story of Roger Ailes, the ex-Fox News CEO chairman, while it didn’t do well critically or financially, still holds significance in Robbie’s filmography. It has a few advantages though, with one being the almost subtle approach to the tale taken by director Jay Roach, who is recognized for his work in comedy with movies like Austin Powers, Meet the Parents, and The Campaign.
Another crucial aspect lies in the acting sector. This film truly belongs to Charlize Theron, who portrays Megyn Kelly with remarkable accuracy and without an ounce of condescension. However, Margot Robbie also delivers a commendable performance as Kayla Pospisil, a character that appears to be based on several individuals.

I, Tonya
In a significant boost to Margot Robbie’s acting career, the film “I, Tonya” – her first Oscar nomination – holds equal importance as her roles in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “Suicide Squad.” On one side, her outstanding performance marks the pinnacle of her acting abilities, while on the other, it was her debut as a movie producer.
Regarding the second point, Robbie is a high-profile star who undeniably values her work. She has a deep passion for her craft and ensures that when her name appears on a poster, the end result matches the reasons she initially agreed to be involved. Despite Tonya Harding being challenging to evoke audience empathy, Robbie successfully achieved this.

The Legend of Tarzan
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t help but sing praises for an often overlooked gem in Robbie’s impressive filmography – “The Legend of Tarzan”. With a meager 30% score on the Tomatometer, it seems to have left critics rather indifferent, yet I find myself at a loss as to what specific aspects they were yearning for. For those who aren’t already enamored with the IP, it still manages to offer an enjoyable cinematic experience.
Approximately a month before the release of “Suicide Squad,” “The Legend of Tarzan” marked the initial evidence that Margot Robbie possesses star power capable of attracting audiences to a blockbuster movie. Surprisingly, “Tarzan” exceeded expectations, particularly considering its hefty $180 million production budget. Regrettably, its global earnings of $357 million were not sufficient to declare the film an unquestionable success. However, it’s hard to deny that if Margot Robbie wasn’t featured in the poster, this film based on a lesser-known intellectual property would have likely performed far less well.

Once Upon a Time… In Hollywood
Starring in a Quentin Tarantino film is similar to an initiation ritual in Hollywood, and in “Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood,” Robbie delivered one of her finest performances yet. Her portrayal of the late Sharon Tate radiates warmth, making it challenging to envision another actor embodying the role as convincingly.
The enthusiasm that Robbie brings to her portrayal of Tate significantly boosts her performance. This eagerness is infectious, allowing the audience to share in her joy about the present and future. Given the movie’s departure from actual events, viewers can feel excited along with her. Overall, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood might not be as powerful as Pulp Fiction or Inglourious Basterds, but it undeniably strengthens Tarantino’s filmography.

The Suicide Squad
Despite suffering financially, The Suicide Squad showcases undeniably that James Gunn is the ideal choice to guide DC’s cinematic future. It’s a stark contrast to David Ayer’s film (not entirely his fault), which was more like Frankenstein’s Monster. Heartfelt, vibrant, and featuring characters who stand out uniquely, it ranks among the finest comic book adaptations ever produced.
Since Creature Commandos has verified that both The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker‘s first season are included in the DC Universe (fingers crossed for Birds of Prey as well), let’s hope Harley Quinn’s role isn’t recast. Robbie is spot-on for the part, and if she’s willing to reprise it, she should be given the chance to do so.

The Wolf of Wall Street
Martin Scorsese’s flashy, visually lavish, profanity-filled comedy about crime, The Wolf of Wall Street, catapulted Robbie into instant stardom. Few movies in cinematic history have had such a profound impact on a performer’s career and brought them to the attention of mainstream audiences as this one did for Robbie.
Critics find fault with the overwhelming nature of “Wolf”, particularly its lengthy runtime and the acting by Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill. Yet, it’s another triumph for Scorsese. The excess is intentional, and the movie executes it skillfully. If Jordan Belfort, portrayed by DiCaprio, were likable, the film might have fallen flat, but his unlikability is key to its success, making it a challenging yet engaging three-hour journey.
