It’s been five years since “The Magicians” concluded, and I’m still astonished that more people haven’t discovered this fantastic television series. Originating from Lev Grossman’s book trilogy, “The Magicians” stands out among other fantasy shows adapted from novels because it isn’t shy about taking the narrative to new heights. The series goes beyond the books in certain aspects, particularly by deepening the character relationships that are only subtly hinted at in the novels. Airing from 2015 to 2020, “The Magicians” left a lasting impression on the fantasy genre.
Although every part of the show is worth watching, the top-rated episodes of “The Magicians” demonstrate why it stands out as one of the most impressive contributions to fantasy television in the 2010s. While popular shows such as “Game of Thrones” frequently grab headlines for their significant impact on the genre during this period, “The Magicians” deserves equal recognition. With five seasons brimming with excitement, drama, and mystery, not a single moment in this groundbreaking series should be forgotten and celebrated for many years to come.
The Magicians Is A Criminally Underrated Fantasy Show
Every Fantasy Fan Should Be Watching The Magicians
On the Syfy network, The Magicians aired during its entire run, yet didn’t leave as significant an impact on the fantasy genre as some larger-budget productions. Surprisingly, the show doesn’t seem to get the recognition it deserves for its innovative contributions to fantasy and television in general. Featuring a talented cast headed by Jason Ralph, Stella Maeve, Hale Appleman, Arjun Gupta, among many other exceptional performers, The Magicians offered a contemporary, darker perspective on the magic school narrative, rejuvenating it for a new audience of fantasy enthusiasts.
The storyline was consistently captivating and left us hanging on every word, but it was the characters that truly drew us into the series. “The Magicians” boasts one of the most heartbreaking scenes in any fantasy TV show, solidifying its status as a series capable of stirring deep emotions within viewers. Since the series ended, it has evolved beyond being just a cult classic, but there’s still a long road ahead before it receives the recognition it truly deserves.
The Magicians Was Consistently Good For Five Seasons
There’s No Bad Season Of The Magicians
In contrast to many fantasy series where one season tends to fall short, The Magicians consistently excels. Instead of sticking rigidly to Lev Grossman’s original texts, the show has been bold enough to modify them to better suit television and further develop its characters. As a result, even after adapting all three of Grossman’s books, the series continued for two additional seasons that matched the quality of the earlier ones. Season 3 is particularly noteworthy for its inventive storytelling, but each season effectively draws viewers deeper into the narrative.
Despite the significant transformations in “The Magicians” and some unexpected turns that left viewers in shock, the show’s quality remained unaffected. It’s rare to find a series without its flaws, and while “The Magicians” may bring tears to your eyes, most of its storyline decisions align with the greater narrative and contribute positively to the story. The series contains intense moments that can be challenging to endure, but “The Magicians” emphasizes character development and empathy, solidifying its status as a success.

Why The Magicians Ended With Season 5
It Was Hard To Say Goodbye, But The Magicians Ended With A Bang
Regardless of the dedicated efforts from the writers, producers, and actors to ensure that The Magicians continued and gave its characters fitting conclusions, the show ultimately ended after season 5 following its cancelation by Syfy. However, it’s evident that the creative team was aware such an outcome might happen, as they crafted a fulfilling finale for fans to cherish, even if the series may be remembered in this way (via Collider). Of course, we can still dream that The Magicians could return someday, but its series finale served as a powerful conclusion, regardless.
It could be beneficial that “The Magicians” was terminated, since it never faced a decline in quality or momentum throughout its run. Remarkably, the series managed to preserve the unique elements that initially captivated viewers. Although certain character conclusions were controversial, this doesn’t detract from the lasting impact and enduring appeal of “The Magicians”. Viewing the show now is just as enjoyable as it was during the 2010s.
