Dishonored 2 Studio’s Reputation for “Refined Games” Saved its Future

If it weren’t for Arkane’s reputation in game design, Dishonored 2 – a critically acclaimed title – might not have kept Arkane Studios afloat due to its lack of commercial success. (Julien Eveillé, former designer at Arkane Lyon)

During an interview with PCGamer, Eveillé discussed the high production costs associated with their game and the studio’s reputation for polished video game launches. Notably, Eveillé mentioned that it cost more to produce Dishonored 2 than The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Eveillé said, “It was somewhat peculiar and off-putting.” He explained, “When Bethesda examined the sales figures, they seemed to think, ‘Skyrim sold tremendously. And it cost less than Dishonored 2 to produce.’ So they started asking questions. From a financial perspective, it’s logical for them to ask why they should continue supporting you. However, we knew that we had a kind of ‘seal-of-quality’ protection, making our games potentially the most polished in the entire Bethesda portfolio.

Eveillé further disclosed that Arkane’s knack for creating polished games played a crucial role in preserving the studio. He also discussed the departure of Raphael Colantionio, founder of the studio, and how Dinga Bakaba stepped up to lead the team. These events ultimately paved the way for the studio’s future prosperity.

Arkane Lyon has taken a break from releasing single-player games following the launch of Deathloop, but their upcoming major project is Marvel’s Blade, a game announced in December 2023 with a trailer. Although specific details about Marvel’s Blade are scarce, we do have some information: it will employ a third-person camera perspective, marking a change for the studio that typically creates first-person games.

ever since its initial reveal, art director Sebastien Mitton has shared several preliminary sketches for the upcoming game. Although these pieces do not necessarily show what the final product will be like, they suggest that Marvel’s Blade is set in Paris.

Arkane Studios hasn’t specified a launch date for “Marvel’s Blade” as of now, but whispers from late 2023 hint at an internal target year of 2027 for the game. It’s important to note that this timeline could shift if additional development time is needed, potentially pushing the release even later. For your reference, Arkane Lyon’s latest significant title, “Deathloop,” hit the shelves in 2021.

In May 2024, following the closure of Arkane Austin due to weak sales of Redfall, Dinga Bikaba, director of Arkane Lyon, expressed his thoughts on social media about the shutdown and urged executives not to push them into “greedy gold rush tactics,” among other things. However, he did assure everyone that Arkane Lyon was secure.
