Disney has revealed the initial trailer for Pixar’s summer sci-fi adventure titled “Elio.” This is Pixar’s 28th feature film, marking their first original production since 2023’s “Elemental.” As described by the studio, the movie is a “humorous journey” that revolves around a character who is a “space enthusiast with an overactive imagination and a fascination for aliens.” The plot follows Elio as he embarks on a grand adventure when he’s transported to the Communiverse, an interstellar organization consisting of representatives from various galaxies. When Elio is mistaken for Earth’s leader, he must learn to interact with bizarre alien beings, handle a crisis of cosmic scale, and ultimately find his true place among the stars.
In the animated film “Elio”, Yonas Kibreab lends his voice to the character of Elio, while Aunt Olga is portrayed by Zoe Saldaña from “Avatar”. Remy Edgerly, known for his role in “Sing 2”, voices Glordon, and Lord Grigon is brought to life by Brad Garrett, famously seen in “Everybody Loves Raymond”. Jameela Jamil, a cast member of “The Good Place”, plays Ambassador Questa, and Shirley Henderson, recognized from the “Harry Potter” series, voices OOOOO.
This upcoming science fiction film set in outer space is helmed by Madeline Sharafian, director of ‘Burrow’ Sparkshort, Domee Shi who directed the short films ‘Bao’ and ‘Turning Red’, and Adrian Molina, co-screenwriter and co-director of ‘Coco’. The production is overseen by Mary Alice Drumm, an associate producer from ‘Coco’.
Riding that PG line
In an exclusive conversation with Empire magazine, the filmmakers disclosed that character Elio will incorporate elements reminiscent of sci-fi horror, drawing inspiration from renowned instances in the genre such as John Carpenter’s The Thing and Ridley Scott’s Alien. This includes references to the spider-headed creature, the arm-devouring defibrillation scene, and the flame-throwing Kurt Russell character from The Thing, as well as the suspenseful elements of Close Encounters and Carpenter’s chilling portrayal of icy fear.
This is one of our most delightful revelations, so I’d rather keep some details under wraps,” she playfully hinted. “My aim is to make it more bizarre and slightly unsettling, while maintaining the boundary of a PG-rated film.
Instead of Pixar’s sci-fi typically evoking thoughts of Wall·E (no disrespect to Lightyear), Sharafian promises a similar heartfelt emotion but with a fresh message. She shared that the main character, Elio, is “a little boy who feels like an outsider on Earth,” and when he’s transported into the ‘Communiverse’, alien ambassadors view him as Earth’s leader. According to her, his feelings of loneliness are central to the film, as he yearns to be accepted so intensely that he deceives others about his identity to belong in this extraordinary alien world.
The new feature we’re introducing is following closely on the heels of the massive hit “Inside Out 2” from 2024, which held the title of Hollywood’s top-grossing animated film for a few months before being overtaken by “Ne Zha 2,” a Chinese animated adventure. Even though “Inside Out 2” managed to earn over $1 billion worldwide, it fell short at the Oscars to “Flow,” a Latvian film, in the category of Best Animated Feature. Therefore, “Elio” needs to be nothing short of extraordinary to make an impact at the box office and end Disney‘s lengthy Oscar drought.
Pixar’s Elio beams into theatres June 13th.
