Disney Announces Two New Spider-Man Rides For Its Theme Parks

As a lifelong Marvel fan who has witnessed the evolution of Spider-Man from comic books to the big screen, I can hardly contain my excitement about Disney’s latest announcement! The prospect of swinging through Shanghai and Hong Kong on a thrilling Spider-Man coaster is absolutely web-tastic.

Spider-Man is making an appearance in Disney’s Chinese theme parks. As Disney prepares to launch two new attractions featuring Iron Man and the Avengers at Disney California Adventure Park, they have announced plans for a Spider-Man roller coaster in Hong Kong Disneyland and the first Marvel-themed ride in Shanghai Disneyland. These exciting developments were shared by Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, during the Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase at D23, and concept art for these rides has been released online.

At Shanghai’s Spider-Man thrill ride, modeled after a coaster, Disney states that “Peter Parker has landed us in quite a predicament.” The narrative will take us on a fast-paced journey with him to extricate ourselves from this predicament. This new attraction seems to combine an indoor dark ride experience with an outdoor roller coaster reminiscent of Shanghai’s TRON Lightcycle Power Run.

Hong Kong Disneyland Spider-Man Ride

At Hong Kong Disneyland, a section inspired by Tony Stark’s Expo from Iron Man 2 serves as the setting for the Marvel-themed park. Here, visitors find themselves in the midst of a conflict between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. Disney explains that Peter Parker, who is now an intern at Stark Industries and a friend of Tony Stark’s, has been invited to showcase some new inventions. However, this invitation has also piqued the interest of one of Spidey’s most dangerous adversaries. As guests try to aid Spider-Man in safeguarding the technology, they become entangled in the action themselves. This ride appears to be a motion simulator experience.

The Untitled Spider-Man attraction is included in a multi-year development project that’s converting a sector of Hong Kong’s Tomorrowland into Stark Expo, an area that has been running the Iron Man Experience ride since 2017 and the Ant-Man and Wasp: Nano Battle! ride since 2019.

2021 saw the debut of WEB Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure at California’s Avengers Campus, with its interactive ride counterpart, Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure, launching a year later at Disneyland Paris’ Avengers Campus in 2022. The narratives of these superhero campuses mirror the interconnected universe of Marvel Cinema, where recruits from around the world gather to learn and team up with Earth’s strongest heroes, under the acronym CAMPUS (Centralized Assembly Mobilized to Prepare, Unite, and Safeguard).

At Disney Experiences, the Imagineers are responsible for envisioning, constructing, decorating, and transforming stories into tangible locations. Currently, there are Imagineers working globally, as everything we’ll be discussing is under active development, according to D’Amaro at D23. He also confirmed that Disney Experiences is following through on everything it showcased at D23, including the newly announced Avengers: Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab rides within the main Avengers Campus at Disneyland Resort.
