Due to disappointing ticket sales and unfavorable reviews, Disney has temporarily halted production on another live-action remake following the release of Snow White. Before it even reached theaters, Snow White faced much controversy. Critics were not impressed with the CGI dwarves, and lead actress Rachel Zegler stirred up dissatisfaction among Snow White fans by criticizing the original film’s romantic storyline. Disney has had mixed results with its live-action adaptations, but Snow White is clearly one of the failures, leading to a possible reconsideration of plans for Tangled, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
Initially, Michael Gracey (known for The Greatest Showman) was slated to direct the live-action version of Tangled, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Thor: Love and Thunder, Do Revenge) writing the script. Although it’s not explicitly mentioned, it seems likely that the production of Tangled might have been put on hold due to the less-than-impressive performance of Snow White. Snow White has earned $69 million domestically and $145 million globally, but its production cost was a hefty $270 million.
During the second week after its premiere, the movie “Snow White” experienced a significant decline in ticket sales, eventually ranking second at the box office behind Jason Statham’s film, “A Working Man.” While the latter earned $15.6 million domestically, “Snow White” managed to gross $13.7 million. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is uncertain whether production on a possible sequel or reimagining of “Tangled” will resume in the future. Time will tell.
Previously, Disney’s film preceding Snow White was The Lion King (Mufasa edition), which initially had a domestic opening of only $35.4 million but eventually grossed a total of $718 million worldwide. It’s highly improbable that Snow White will match this level of success in rebounding. Prior to The Lion King (Mufasa edition) was another underperformer, The Little Mermaid, which earned a total of $570 million.
Looking ahead, Disney plans a live-action remake of the beloved movie “Lilo & Stitch,” based on its 2022 animated version. A delightful sneak peek was unveiled during the Super Bowl, featuring Stitch taking over the broadcast and darting across the football field. The “Lilo & Stitch” spot during the Super Bowl has become the second-most-watched live-action trailer for Disney of all time. Therefore, anticipation is running high for this project, set to hit theaters on May 23rd.
In my humble opinion, following the enchanting journey of Lilo & Stitch, you’ll find yourself immersed in the live-action wonder that is Moana. The second installment of this captivating animated series has made a splash on Disney+, racking up some jaw-dropping statistics. According to Disney, subscribers have devoted an astonishing 1.4 billion hours to streaming Moana 2, which equates to a whopping 735 million viewings. Impressively, this sequel ranks third among all films released in 2024, bringing in a staggering $1 billion at the box office.
In simpler terms, the animated movie “Tangled” presents a modern take on the fairy tale of Rapunzel, with Mandy Moore portraying the character of Rapunzel and Zachary Levi playing Flynn Rider. Previously, Levi has expressed his willingness to reprise his role in the live-action adaptation of this film.
In 2023, during a fan convention, when the suggestion was made that Florence Pugh might portray Rapunzel in a live-action version of Tangled, Levi expressed interest in returning as Flynn Rider if she were cast.
Levi mentioned something intriguing he’d seen online earlier – there’s speculation that Florence Pugh could star as Rapunzel. If that happens, I’d be over the moon! Here’s an interesting twist: my last name is actually Pugh too, so we’d have a ‘Pugh-Pugh’ situation in Tangled, wouldn’t that be something?
