Alright matey, let me tell ya ’bout me experience with these Disney Lorcana cards! As a lifelong Disney fan and avid card collector, I can honestly say that this game has become me favorite pastime since it landed on our shores. The attention to detail in the artwork and the strategic depth of each character’s abilities have made for countless hours of fun with me mates.
From the moment I laid me eyes on Captain Amelia and Mr. Big, I knew I was hooked. The way they bring the world of Zootopia to life is nothing short of magical, and their unique abilities make them a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. And don’t even get me started on Isabela Madrigal (Golden Child)! Her Ladies First ability is like gold dust when you need a little extra lore to push through a tough turn.
But it ain’t just about the characters, oh no, it’s also about the gameplay itself. The strategic depth of each character’s abilities and the ever-changing landscape of the board make for a constantly evolving experience that keeps me coming back for more. And with new sets like Steel and Amethyst on the horizon, I can’t wait to see what other treasures await me in the world of Lorcana.
Now if only they could make a Stitch expansion… I might just have to build me own deck of alien buccaneers! Arr matey, if you’re looking for a new game to sink your teeth into, give Disney Lorcana a try. It’s guaranteed to bring a smile to yer face and keep ya entertained for hours on end. Yarr, it’s the best pirate’s booty I ever did find!
Embarking on a thrilling journey, Disney’s Lorcana ventures into the Azurite Sea, a realm where piracy and science intertwine. This fusion creates an exceptionally unique range in Lorcana’s growing collection, featuring two contrasting playstyles within the Emerald Sapphire and Amber Ruby Starter Decks. Furthermore, iconic Disney franchises such as Rescue Rangers, Great Mouse Detective, and Big Hero 6 are incorporated, while beloved series like Moana, Winnie the Pooh, and Mickey and Friends also play significant roles in this set. In our review of the Starter Decks, we’ll also explore key cards from the Illumineer’s Trove and Stitch Collector’s Set to enhance your Azurite Sea gameplay experience.
We’ll kick things off by discussing the Starter Sets, which are categorized as Emerald Sapphire and Amber Ruby. The Emerald Sapphire set focuses on Inventors; when characters tagged with that keyword join the game, you’ll benefit from using Support characters, Locations, and Items that enhance their abilities. The teamwork in this Starter Deck is remarkable, and at first sight, it appears to have greater complexity, though first impressions can sometimes be misleading.
In Amber Ruby, the theme revolves around Pirates, but instead of just a simple storyline, it emphasizes competing against opponents. The locations play a significant role within this deck, as does the solitary Item, which enables you to manage frequent challenges by providing healing, buffs, or rewards when characters are defeated.
Amber Ruby is a Pirate-themed game that focuses on competition rather than storytelling. The locations and one special item in the deck are important because they help you deal with challenges more effectively, offering options like healing, boosting characters, or getting something extra when your characters lose a fight.
Amber Ruby Starter Set
Amber Ruby boasts an excellent collection of cards priced at 1 and 2 units, such as Moana (Wise Sailor) and the Pooh Pirate Ship Item, both valued at 1 unit. Although Moana can’t engage in challenges until you have a Captain on the field, her 3 attack points are beneficial early on, and maintaining her allows you to transform her into Moana (Kakamora Chief) later. This already makes for an impressive pairing, but it becomes an even more attractive duo if you can have two locations active at the same time, allowing you to move all characters and collect numerous lore in a single action. The Pirate Ship is particularly useful because it allows you to retrieve a pirate character from your discard pile and put it back into your hand, which can be quite handy, even if used only once on a crucial card.
As a fan, I can’t help but appreciate cards such as Winnie The Pooh (Hunny Pirate), Lead The Way, and Wendy Darling (Courageous Captain) in my collection. Among them, Wendy truly stands out with her ability to bring a Captain (a bit like Moana!) into play and receive an enhancement when other Pirate characters are active on the battlefield.
The 3 and 4 cost cards offer some fantastic choices too, like Owl (Pirate Lookout), Mickey Mouse (Courageous Sailor), Jasmine (Rebellious Princess), and Kakamora (Boarding Party). However, it’s Jasmine who shines brightest in this group. Not only does she gather 2 lore when questing, but she also manages to reduce the opponent’s lore by 1, making her the golden card of this tier.
In summary, the costlier cards in this deck include Fix-It Felix Jr. (Niceland Steward) at 5 cost and Jim Hawkins (Honorable Pirate) at 7 cost. Fix-It Felix provides a beneficial +2 health bonus to locations, which are scarce in this deck. On the other hand, Jim Hawkins can seek 2 lore and boasts 7 health, along with the ability to draw Pirate characters from your deck if they’re among the top 4 cards. This effect is activated when played, providing you with additional choices during later stages of the game that could potentially shift the game’s outcome or help you escape difficult situations.
Locations play a crucial role in this strategy as well. While there are several options available, Hundred Acre Island and Skull Rock are particularly valuable due to their abilities: Hundred Acre Island grants 1 lore when your characters are removed from the game, while Skull Rock provides +1 attack at the start of your turn.
Emerald Sapphire Starter Set
Let’s shift to the Emerald Sapphire Deck, highlighting the Inventor attribute. To start off, a simple early combination is Professor Callaghan (Yokai) and Institute of Technology (Prestigious University). This location is vital in this deck because it not only boosts inventor characters by +1 health but also awards you 1 lore at the beginning of your turn if a character is there. Additionally, Fred (Mascot by Day) is a straightforward choice. Although he’s just a 1 & 1 character with 1 lore during questing, when your opponent challenges him, you immediately receive 2 lore. Most players usually choose to ignore him instead.
This deck truly excels in its 2 and 3 cost card arrangements, providing an overwhelming variety of choices and tactics. If your character acquires an item at the start, consider playing HeiHei (Tricky Chicken), using the item immediately so it can’t be ready at the beginning of your opponent’s turn. Alternatively, you could opt for Honey Lemon (Genius Chemist), which allows you to exert 2 resources in your inkwell to force your opponent to discard a card, or choose to quest for 2 instead.
Go Go Tomago (Darting Dynamo) has the Evasive ability and then enables you to exert 2 resources in your inkwell to increase lore of a damaged opposing character, equal to that character’s damage. Aunt Cass (Biggest Fan), on the other hand, will boost a selected inventor character’s lore by +1 when she quests.
These are merely examples of characters; Megabot, Baymax’s Healthcare Chip, and Heffalumps And Woozles also offer additional play options. For instance, Megabot can banish an opponent’s item from play, Baymax heals damage from your characters, and Heffalumps And Woozles prevent a character from questing during their next turn.
Emphasizing the potency of this collection are cards that cost 3 and 4 resources, such as Hiro Hamada (Robotics Prodigy), which lets you scan your deck for an Item or robot character card and place it on top of your stack. Regarding Items, having the Emerald Chromicon active is crucial because it enables you to retrieve characters that were expelled during your opponent’s turns and keep them in your hand instead. Baymax offers versatility because he reduces the cost of inventor characters, removes damage from another character, and has the ability to seek 2 lore. If you need to confront an adversary, B.E.N. (Eccentric Robot) is beneficial due to his ability to seek 2 lore and then augment another character’s attack by 4 this turn, making some of your characters remarkably powerful in the process.
In the premium category, you’ll find characters such as Goofy (Skilled Shipwright), Ludwig Von Drake (Self-Declared Genius), and Gadget Hackwrench (Sharp Bosun). Goofy and Ludwig are exceptional quest givers, each possessing three lore points. Interestingly, if you already have the 2-cost Gadget in play, you might be able to acquire Gadget Hackwrench at a lower cost.
Hey there fellow gamers! Let me tell ya, I’ve played my fair share of card games over the years, and the Emerald Sapphire deck has definitely piqued my interest from the get-go. Its style and play strategy is right up my alley, and I can already envision numerous ways to enhance it even further with new cards. To be honest, I might’ve overlooked the Amber Ruby Deck initially, but after giving it a spin more times than I can count, I find myself going back to it more often than anticipated. Both decks have their unique charm and provide distinct gaming experiences, and while there are a few clunkers in both sets, they still pack some real gems and effectively utilize Lorcana’s diverse mechanics without sacrificing the game’s trademark accessibility. It might not be the strongest Starter Set out there, but trust me, those who jump in will find plenty to adore. Keep on gaming!
Starter Sets Rating: 4 out of 5
Illumineer’s Trove Best Card Additions
As a long-time collector and player of this game, I can confidently say that the Illumineer’s Trove is an absolute must-have for any dedicated fan. This set not only provides a convenient storage solution with its sturdy box and card dividers, but it also offers a wealth of new cards to expand your collection. With 8 booster packs containing 12 cards each, you’re guaranteed to find some truly game-changing additions to your Starter Sets and other decks. And at just $50, the value is unbeatable. Trust me, I’ve been there – starting out with a limited collection and wishing for more. The Illumineer’s Trove will take your gaming experience to the next level, providing you with crucial cards that can significantly enhance your strategies and improve your overall gameplay. Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity!
As a seasoned player with years of gaming under my belt, I’ve learned to appreciate the strategic depth that Starter Sets bring to the table. In the case of Emerald Sapphire, one particular addition that has caught my attention is the Owl Island Location. As someone who enjoys maximizing efficiency and minimizing resource spending, this location offers a tantalizing opportunity to save resources on my initial action each turn. The scaling effect based on the number of characters at the location makes it even more enticing, as it allows for substantial savings with a larger party.
When I find myself in a situation where I can muster up a crew of four adventurers, I’m able to perform actions without spending a single resource, which can open up a world of possibilities. But that’s not all – the real kicker comes when I decide to take a second action within a turn. The immediate gain of 3 lore points is always a welcome bonus, and the fact that this location only costs 3 resources makes it an attractive addition to my collection.
All in all, the Owl Island Location in Emerald Sapphire is a game-changer for me, providing both strategic flexibility and resource management benefits that enhance my gaming experience and help me stay competitive in any adventure I embark on.
A delightful new feature is Bellwether (Assistant Mayor), enabling you to bestow the ‘rash’ trait on an opponent’s character whenever you play a card, which forces them to engage in combat instead of questing, potentially removing powerful questing characters from the game more quickly. Additionally, Tadashi Hamada (Gifted Roboticist) becomes crucial if you aim to deploy high-cost cards earlier in the game. Hamada can already quest for 2, but if he is banished during your opponent’s turn, you can add him to your inkwell. Moreover, in the same turn, you may also place the top card of your deck into your inkwell, potentially adding up to three cards to your inkwell in a single turn, expanding your options for the following round.
Playing this strategy would facilitate the deployment of costlier characters such as Basil (Disguised Detective), Tadashi Hamada (Baymax Inventor), and Yokai (Scientific Supervillain). Notably, Yokai proves particularly menacing due to its ability to summon Microbots at no charge, followed by additional cards upon questing based on the cards your opponent has in play.
For Amber Ruby, there are some fantastic one-cost choices such as Thievery, which removes 1 lore from an opponent and adds 1 to yours, and Card Soldier’s Spear, which boosts the attack of all your damaged characters by 1. Another remarkable option is the Flotilla location – if you have a character there at the beginning of your turn, opponents lose 1 lore, and you gain an equivalent amount. Furthermore, when Vanellope Von Schweetz (Gutsy Go-Getter) is in play, you can draw a card and earn 1 lore at the start of your turn, provided she’s stationed at a location.
Julieta Madrigal (Outstanding Chef) helps reduce up to 2 damage on you and gives you a card draw if that damage is completely healed. Namaari (Fang’s Heir), meanwhile, possesses two-weapon fighting, enabling her to inflict damage on two characters during a conflict. The duo of Nani (Caring Sibling) and David (Skilled Surfer) are also a formidable combination, and Chip ‘N’ Dale (Recovery Team) boasts 6 strength in all three of their cards and has a quest value of 3, along with the ability to retrieve a character card from your discard pile when new cards enter your inkwell.
Be mindful of Scar’s cards as well. Besides boasting a 4-attack power and a quest of 3, Scar (Heartless Hunter) enables you to inflict 2 damage upon one of your characters, followed by dealing the same to an opponent’s character. Moreover, the Song “Be King Undisputed” stands out, forcing each opponent to discard and eliminate one of their characters. Lastly, keep in mind that Simba is exceptional; when exerted at the end of your turn, he equips your other characters with readiness.
Steel and Amethyst Additions
Besides the options in the Starter Sets, Steel and Amethyst are equally attractive choices. Mr. Big stands out as one of my favorites, not just because I’m a fan of Zootopia, but also due to his unique trait of standing unfazed against characters who possess 2 attacks or more, and he has a quest of level 3. The song “I’m Still Here” can bestow a character with Resist +2, followed by drawing a card, making it an excellent companion for Mr. Big.
As a seasoned game designer with over two decades of experience, I find Captain Amelia to be an unparalleled character in this strategy board game. Her invincibility against pirates is a game-changer, giving players a powerful ally who can hold her own even when the odds are stacked against them. Furthermore, her ability to boost the Resist stat of other characters and embark on quests for bonus rewards adds depth and versatility to her role within the group.
Marine Sergeant Calhoun is another invaluable asset, thanks to her unique abilities. Her knack for increasing Resistance and banishing opponents in challenges provides a strategic advantage that can turn the tide of battle in your favor. The lore she accrues with each successful banishment only enhances her worth as an ally.
Lastly, Treasure Mountain is a dynamic element that keeps players on their toes. Its capacity to deal damage based on the number of characters present at the location adds an exciting and unpredictable factor to the gameplay experience. I’ve seen many a game altered by a well-timed activation of this powerful terrain feature.
As an enthusiast, I’d like to highlight Amethyst’s unique blend of affordable and exceptionally beneficial cards. One of her standout low-cost actions is A Very Merry Unbirthday, which prompts each opponent to discard their top 2 deck cards. If you manage to acquire Mama Odie (Solitary Sage) later, you can transfer up to 2 damage counters from chosen characters to your opponents’ characters whenever you play a song. Additionally, Magic Carpet (Amazing Flier), though a bit pricier at 3 cost, is a quest card that always proves useful.
One interesting card is Isabela Madrigal (Golden Child), who typically requires only a single quest as prerequisite. However, her special ability “Ladies First” offers an additional 3 points of lore when questing, provided no other characters have quested in the same turn. This rule also prevents other characters from questing for the remainder of the turn, so careful consideration is required to determine the optimal strategy for each specific turn.
If you have several Fairy or Lion characters, it’s advantageous to have Tinker Bell (Queen of the Azurite Fairies) because when she embarks on a quest with another character, all your other Fairy characters gain +1 knowledge that turn. On the other hand, Scar (Tempestuous Lion) starts with 4 damage points, but when combined with Rush and Challenger abilities (which increases attack by 3 when challenging), he becomes incredibly powerful with a total of 7 damage points. Hades (Lord of the Dead) can also embark on quests for 3 points, but if one of your characters is banished during your opponent’s turn, you immediately receive 2 knowledge points.
Stitch Collector’s Set
For enthusiasts of stitching, the Stitch Collector’s Set is a clear choice. Not only do you receive four Booster packs and an exceptional foil promo card featuring Stitch (Alien Buccaneer), but also the highly coveted Lorcana Portfolio. This portfolio boasts beautiful artwork from all the released Stich’s Lorcana cards, making it my go-to option whenever I handle Lorcana cards in person.
