Disney+ Revives Power Rangers with Percy Jackson Showrunners: What to Expect!

It seems that the Power Rangers are returning to Disney’s management—at least temporarily. As reported exclusively by TheWrap, discussions are underway between Disney+ and 20th Century Television for a fresh live-action Power Rangers series. The team behind the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, will serve as writers, producers, and showrunners for this new project.

The company Hasbro, who currently holds the rights to the Power Rangers intellectual property, is also set to produce the series. Initial indications point towards a complete overhaul of the franchise with the intention of attracting a new audience, while simultaneously maintaining appeal for longtime enthusiasts of the vibrant superhero team.

Back in 1993, The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers made their initial appearance, drawing heavily on the Japanese show known as Super Sentai. Throughout the years, this franchise has gone through multiple adaptations with mixed results. Notably, Netflix launched the first entirely American-made series titled Power Rangers Cosmic Fury.

Indeed, Disney isn’t new to handling the Power Rangers. Way back in 2001, Disney took over the Power Rangers as part of a $5.3 billion buyout of Fox Family Worldwide, which encompassed Saban Entertainment. Since then, under Disney’s management, the franchise has produced several seasons from 2003 to 2009, including:

  • Power Rangers Ninja Storm
  • Power Rangers Dino Thunder
  • Power Rangers S.P.D.
  • Power Rangers Mystic Force
  • Power Rangers Operation Overdrive
  • Power Rangers Jungle Fury
  • Power Rangers RPM

Nevertheless, Disney faced difficulties keeping up the brand’s appeal, which some fans perceived as poor management of the intellectual property. Over time, Disney sold Power Rangers back to Haim Saban in 2010 for just $43 million – a tiny portion of their initial investment.

2018 saw Hasbro gaining ownership of the franchise from Saban for a whopping $522 million (Saban is quite brilliant…), with the intention of fully exploiting its multimedia capabilities. This new live-action series aligns with Hasbro Entertainment’s broader strategy, which involves maximizing the potential of their most iconic brands in film, TV, and streaming platforms. This strategy includes projects like the live-action universe of Magic: The Gathering, Forgotten Realms on Netflix, upcoming adaptations of Clue and Dungeons & Dragons, among others.

As a cinephile, I’ve been eagerly following the buzz surrounding both Disney+’s upcoming project and the long-awaited Paramount and Skydance’s Power Rangers film. While reports have been abundant about the former, there seems to be a conspicuous silence regarding their potential impact on or replacement of the latter, which was rumored to be in development as early as December 2024.

Credible whispers from the industry suggested that Paramount was not only planning a new film but also negotiating to acquire the Power Rangers property from Hasbro outright. However, no official word has been given yet about whether this live-action series would peacefully coexist with the movie or if it signals a change in direction for the project.

It’s still uncertain whether Disney is merely streaming the series on Disney+ or if they have regained ownership rights to the franchise, an eventuality that could represent an unexpected turn considering Disney’s past dealings with this particular brand.

Simultaneously, Steinberg and Shotz contribute a wealth of experience to the project. Not only did they oversee the hit television adaptation of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which recently wrapped its second season and was renewed for a third, but they are also known for their work on FX’s highly praised series, The Old Man. Both shows were produced under their production company, Quaker Moving Pictures, which has been part of Disney’s 20th Television since 2019.

Discussing the complicated history Disney has had with the Power Rangers and Hasbro’s assertive approach to multi-media, the creation of this new series brings up many intriguing queries regarding the direction of the franchise in the future – and who will be the one to hold the Power Morpher this time.
