Disney was “happy” with The Acolyte – but explains why it was cancelled

As a devoted Star Wars fan with countless hours spent immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I must admit that I was initially excited for The Acolyte. However, after witnessing its untimely cancellation, I find myself feeling more like an acolyte of disappointment than a loyal fan. It’s disheartening to see such a promising show fall victim to the high costs and unpredictable nature of audience engagement in today’s streaming landscape.

The Star Wars spin-off series, The Acolyte, sparked debate among viewers and faced a significant amount of harmful internet discussion, even though it generally received positive critical appraisal.

The series concluded following its initial season, as subsequent episodes stopped airing, and later, Alan Bergman, a co-head at Disney Entertainment, clarified that the decision wasn’t based on the show’s quality, but rather due to its expensive production costs and insufficient viewership numbers.

Bergman commented to Vulture: “Regarding Acolyte, we were content with our results, but they weren’t what we expected considering the cost structure of this production. frankly, it wasn’t sufficient to produce a second season. That’s why we didn’t proceed with that.

He also mentioned the possibility of the ongoing series “Skeleton Crew” extending past its initial season, stating: “For now, ‘Skeleton Crew’ is in development. We’ve noticed some positive momentum. Let’s wait and see how things unfold. The reception for ‘Skeleton Crew’ has been fantastic so far, so we’ll have to monitor the progress as it continues.

As a dedicated fan myself, I can share that during the recent event, Bergman dished out exciting tidbits about the franchise’s future, including its presence on Disney Plus and the big screen. He delved into the details of returning series like Andor and Ahsoka, as well as the forthcoming feature film The Mandalorian and Grogu.

He mentioned that they are eagerly anticipating “Andor” Season 2, as it’s outstanding. He has seen every episode so far, and he finds it to be an amazing season.

After that, we move on to Ahsoka’s second season, which is being overseen by Dave Filoni. We also have several other series in the pipeline that are currently being worked on.

Let’s wait and decide on our next steps. Earlier, I mentioned that whatever we choose should be exceptional, and once we believe we have found what we need, we will take action.

As for the movies, right now we’ve got “The Mandalorian” scheduled for release on Memorial Day in ’26, and we’re working on several other films. Once we’re prepared, we’ll share updates about these projects.

I’m eagerly anticipating the arrival of the second season, yet it seems this series is helping me cultivate patience in a way that nothing else has.
