Disney’s Involvement With Andor Season 2 Is Great News for Star Wars Fans

As a dedicated Star Wars fan who has seen my fair share of behind-the-scenes drama and creative differences, I can’t help but feel a sense of relief and excitement about Tony Gilroy’s creative freedom for Andor Season 2. The first season was a masterpiece that breathed new life into the franchise, and it’s heartening to know that Disney and Lucasfilm have enough trust in Gilroy to let him work his magic without interference.

Tony Gilroy, the mastermind behind Andor, relished a great deal of creative autonomy during the production of Season 2. The initial season of this Star Wars series was hailed as one of the most lauded productions in the franchise’s Disney era, garnering widespread acclaim and eight Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series. This success provided Gilroy with ample room to develop Andor Season 2 with minimal studio meddling.

In the context of creative suggestions, nobody has objected to me saying what I did, according to Gilroy’s statement during his conversation with Empire.

Over the span of my gaming years, Star Wars has gained a reputation for clashes in creative visions that often disrupt projects. One instance that stands out is when directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller were swapped during the production of Solo: A Star Wars Story, but there have been other instances where filmmakers and Disney/Lucasfilm went their separate ways or planned projects never saw the light after an announcement. The New Jedi Order movie, featuring Rey, announced during Star Wars Celebration 2023, has gone through several scriptwriters, and recently, Disney removed a Star Wars film from their 2026 release schedule.

The studio underwent several revisions for the show “Andor” during its development. It wasn’t until the concept of streaming on Disney+ emerged that Gilroy’s initial idea, which was initially turned down, gained traction.

I’m not surprised that Disney and Lucasfilm didn’t offer suggestions for Season 2 of Andor. Over the years, they’ve built a strong bond with this filmmaker. In fact, long before Andor took off, it was none other than Gilroy who helped steer Rogue One: A Star Wars Story out of troubled waters when the spin-off film faced some challenges. The result? A global box office haul of $1 billion and rave reviews – a clear testament to Gilroy’s Midas touch with all things Star Wars! Given his impressive track record, it makes sense that Disney and Lucasfilm feel confident in him, knowing he’s more than capable of weaving captivating tales within the Star Wars universe.

Fans of Star Wars can take comfort knowing that the quality of Andor remains intact for its second season. This show gained popularity through its mature portrayal of the franchise’s themes, revealing a grittier aspect of the Rebellion and emphasizing the Empire’s ruthlessness. One of the standout aspects of Andor is its compelling dialogue, which powerfully conveyed the desperation felt by characters like Kino Loy and Luthen Rael. When the first season debuted in 2022, it was a welcome change, so it’s reassuring that the upcoming season will maintain this approach.
