Disney’s Live-Action Lilo & Stitch Teaser Unleashes an Adorably Destructive Stitch

As a lifelong Disney enthusiast who has seen “Lilo & Stitch” more times than I can count (and yes, that includes all the special editions), I must say that the first teaser for the live-action remake left me both excited and nostalgic.

In the computer-generated world, Stitch appears adorable and fluffy. Walt Disney Pictures has unveiled the initial trailer for their live-action adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, showcasing Stitch, also known as Experiment 626 (voiced by Chris Sanders), performing his intended function: causing destruction wherever he goes. This tiny beast was crafted by self-proclaimed genius Dr. Jumba Jookiba (Zach Galifianakis) for the purpose of destruction. The new trailer showcases Stitch creating chaos on the serene beaches of Kauai, Hawaii, much like a Godzilla-sized dog.

In a fresh, live-action adaptation of Disney’s 2002 animated film, we follow the humorous and heartwarming tale of a secluded Hawaiian girl named Lilo, portrayed by newcomer Maia Kealoha. After an escaped genetic experiment from space, disguised as a dog, lands on Earth, Lilo takes him in despite him being wanted by both earthly authorities (specifically, ex-CIA Agent turned social worker Cobra Bubbles, played by Courtney B. Vance) and cosmic forces (the United Galactic Federation headed by the Grand Councilwoman, Hannah Waddingham). As Stitch eludes his pursuers, he discovers a sense of purpose in helping Lilo heal her broken family, or as Hawaiians say, her “ohana.

In the latest film, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong takes on the role of Lilo’s caring elder sister and guardian, Nani, while Billy Magnussen portrays UGF Agent Pleakley. Additionally, Kaipo Dudoit is cast as the surfer David, and Tia Carrere lends her voice to Mrs. Kekoa, a social worker character.

Dean Fleischer Camp, who is known for “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On,” will be directing the remake. This remake is being handled by Dan Lin from Disney and Rideback, who previously directed the live-action version of “Aladdin,”, as well as Jonathan Eirich, who has worked on “Haunted Mansion”.

I’m deeply fond of this animated film, and I’ll put in all my effort to ensure a fantastic live-action adaptation. Earlier, I mentioned this to Nerdist. Moreover, the emotional journey of Stitch, where he realizes that his family, despite being small and imperfect, is still valuable, contains one of the most poignant and impactful lines ever in cinema history.

Back in the day, I found myself captivated by an enchanting animated film that was masterfully brought to life by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois. This cinematic gem showcased a stellar cast of voices, with Chris Sanders lending his talents to Stitch, Daveigh Chase as Lilo, Carrere as Nani, Ving Rhames as Cobra Bubbles, David Ogden Stiers as Jumba, Kevin McDonald as Pleakley, Jason Scott Lee as David Kawena, Zoe Caldwell as the Grand Councilwoman, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Captain Gantu. What a remarkable lineup of talent!

As a devoted cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Disney’s upcoming live-action reboots are not just limited to Lilo & Stitch. In the coming years, we can look forward to Rachel Zegler shining as Snow White in 2025, followed by the Dwayne Johnson-led Moana remake in 2026. Disney is also planning a fresh take on timeless classics like Bambi (1942), The Aristocats (1970), Robin Hood (1973), and Hercules (1997). I, for one, can’t wait to witness these magical tales brought to life again!

Lilo & Stitch smashes into theaters May 23, 2025.
