In its premiere, Pixar’s new Disney+ series, Win or Lose, has created a stir by introducing Laurie, a character who openly identifies as Christian – a rarity in Disney projects over the past two decades. The show seems to be moving towards more conventional storytelling, steering clear of the controversial narratives that have impacted some of Disney’s recent films at the box office.
A Character Rooted in Personal Beliefs
In the realm of Pixar’s most successful animated film to date, “Inside Out,” a new series titled “Win or Lose” unfolds. This series revolves around a middle school softball team, the Pickles, as they prepare for their crucial championship game. Throughout its eight episodes, the show delves into the unique struggles and personal development of each team member. The inaugural episode, titled “Coach’s Kid,” concentrates on Laurie, the coach’s daughter, as she grapples with feelings of insecurity.

It’s evident from Laurie’s introduction that her personal beliefs significantly influence her character. Her use of “Heavenly Father” and an angel decoration in her room suggest a strong Christian background. This is a rare occurrence in Disney productions, as Laurie seems to be the first character in almost 20 years whose worldview has been molded by a Christian upbringing, with the last example being the movie “Bridge to Terabithia” from 2007, where faith was explicitly addressed.
In more recent times, it seems Disney has been lacking diverse characters, but with Laurie’s addition, some viewers perceive “Win or Lose” as a comeback to storytelling that encompasses a broader spectrum of viewpoints – something that has been missing in many contemporary Disney productions.
Disney’s Quiet Shift Away From Polarizing Themes
After Laurie’s initial presentation, the movie “Win or Lose” has gained notice not only for its plot but also for some alterations in its content prior to its debut.
As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, an episode initially planned to tackle themes related to gender identity for one of the team’s characters was supposed to be included. However, the studio opted to simplify the script and eliminate this storyline. Although the character in question remains a part of the show, some dialogues and references pertaining to this topic were taken out prior to its release.
Disney expressed their viewpoint by saying, “For our younger audience’s animated content, we understand that parents often wish to bring up specific topics at a time and manner they feel comfortable with.
The statement implies an increasing sensitivity towards viewer apprehensions, noticeably from families expressing discontent about Disney’s recent tendency to incorporate contemporary social-political themes in their productions.
A Lesson From the Box Office?
In my perspective, I’ve noticed that some of the latest Disney productions, such as “Strange World” and “Lightyear,” have showcased unconventional lifestyles, which seemed to somewhat hinder their connection with viewers. Consequently, these films experienced substantial monetary setbacks.
Instead of focusing heavily on ideological messages, the marketing strategy for both “Moana 2” and “Inside Out 2” highlights their adventurous elements and emotional content more prominently. This approach, which has proven successful in the past for Disney and Pixar, emphasizes excitement and feelings over political or philosophical themes.

In their attempt to reconnect with viewers, the film “Win or Lose” might serve as a precursor to a larger transformation towards storytelling that emphasizes character-centric plots over political themes. Time will tell if this change signifies a permanent adjustment in course or merely a momentary adjustment.
With Win or Lose now streaming on Disney+, audiences will have the final say.
