Djimon Hounsou Says He’s “Struggling” With Money Despite Long Career

Djimon Hounsou is getting candid about his finances as a working actor.

Although this actor has been featured in numerous films, such as Gladiator (2000), Guardians of the Galaxy (2014), and A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), he admitted that his earnings are still below what some might anticipate.

He shared with Larry Madowo during a recent interview that he’s been involved in the film industry for more than twenty years. Despite two Academy Award nominations, numerous appearances in major box office hits, and all this success, he’s still grappling financially to sustain his livelihood.

He added, “I’m definitely underpaid.”

Nevertheless, at the age of 60, he pointed out that there has been significant change in African representation within the industry compared to when he initially began working in the 1990s.

In an interview, Hounsou stated, “When I released Amistad, I was up for a Golden Globe nomination. However, I was overlooked for an Oscar, as it was suggested that they believed I had recently arrived from the ship and the streets, with Steven Spielberg merely utilizing me for this film.

Although Hounsou garnered Oscar nominations for his roles in the films “In America” (2004) and “Blood Diamonds” (2007), he often felt that people didn’t give him the recognition as a respected actor commensurate with his achievements.

In my own words, I’ve come to realize that dealing with systemic racism isn’t something trivial or easy to brush aside. As a working actor, I’m grappling with its impact, which is deeply ingrained in many aspects of our society. It seems nearly impossible to overcome it entirely because it permeates so many areas we engage in daily.

Nonetheless, Hounsou remains content with his career path. He also expresses optimism that the entertainment industry will evolve positively when it comes to portraying African characters.
