Do Dante and Lady stop White Rabbit in Devil May Cry?

*Warning: This article contains full spoilers for the final episode of Devil May Cry.*

Adi Shankar, the producer of Castlevania, has now successfully adapted another popular video game, Devil May Cry, for TV. This new adaptation introduces the character Dante, a professional demon hunter played by Johnny Yong Bosch, to our television screens.

In this captivating eight-episode Netflix production, viewers are left breathless as they watch the nail-biting season finale clash between Dante and Lady (Scout Taylor-Compton). Their struggle determines Earth’s destiny, as they confront White Rabbit (Hoon Lee) and his army of demons to halt the opening of the gates of Hell.

In the eighth part, there’s definitely a powerful impact – as intriguing new characters emerge from the game, setting up potential plot developments. However, for those not familiar with gaming, it might spark some unresolved queries.

It’s uncertain yet if Devil May Cry will get a new season, but given the hint of major villains shown at the end of the first season and five primary games (alongside the reboot DmC: Devil May Cry) to draw from, there are definitely more tales for Dante if Netflix decides to approve additional seasons.

Devil May Cry ending explained: Do Dante and Lady stop White Rabbit?

After an intense confrontation involving the three key characters, during which the villain transformed dramatically by harnessing demonic energy, it seemed that White Rabbit’s long-awaited scheme was about to materialize.

With the amulet’s components united and Sparda’s sword assuming its authentic, crimson form as it pierces both brothers, the enigmatic figure known as White Rabbit effectively unlocked the gates to the underworld, thereby metamorphosing the cityscape.

In this scene, I find myself observing a critical moment. Lady, holding only one more bullet meant for a demon, aims and strikes the heart of White Rabbit, noticeably weakening him. As for Dante, with the awareness that his twin brother is still alive, he stands firm in his determination to carry on living, with the intention of finding his long-lost sibling.

After that, he takes out his father’s sword from his chest, metamorphoses into a demonic shape, and rushes towards the adversary. He stabs him through the abdomen first, then splits him completely in two using the sword – thereby ending his life.

After that, Dante takes off the amulet from the Force Edge, a sword belonging to Sparda, thereby sealing the entrance to the demon world and bringing peace back to the city.

What is Operation Inferno?

After the demise of the White Rabbit, Vice President Baines (Kevin Conroy) along with DARKCOM operatives managed to retrieve the primary device belonging to the White Rabbit, a tool capable of locating and keeping open portals between two dimensions, from Anders (Benjamin Abiola). Following this, they dealt with the mole.

The secretive government organization subsequently employs this technology for what they call “the ultimate battle against the depths of Hell,” launching Operation Pyrrhic Victory.

(Pyrrhic Victory refers to a victory that is accompanied by such great losses as to make the victory itself a pyrrhic one, hence the metaphorical reference to Hell and its associated costs.)

In addition to executing VP Baines’s noble crusade aimed at saving human souls, this operation also pays homage to Devil May Cry 4, specifically the 16th mission in the game, as well as Dante’s journey through the Divine Comedy.

During the course of this operation, numerous missiles were launched via the portal towards the underworld, unwittingly striking and killing blameless inhabitants of the Makai, as well as causing significant harm to the realm itself.

The military is subsequently deployed for victory marches, where soldiers snap selfies featuring the American flag amidst devastation, also capturing images of soldiers striking poses next to slain demonic figures and proudly displaying massive bone-shaped trophies on their vehicles.

Later on, the president discloses that Hell and malevolent spirits indeed exist, informing all U.S. residents. Meanwhile, Vice President Baines joins forces with the Urboros Corporation to construct a prison complex below Hell.

Who is the Uroboros Corporation?

In one of the climactic scenes, Vice President Baines is depicted standing beside the ominous Uroboros Corporation leader, who sports a Van Dyke mustache and beard, a pristine white suit with a dark blue cravat, and a burgundy-trimmed cape.

In simpler terms, many gamers would identify him as Arius, the principal antagonist from Devil May Cry 2. He’s a wealthy character, serving as the CEO of Uroboros, and in modern times, he also practices sorcery. His ultimate goal is to exploit demonic power for personal benefits.

Similar to how the Umbrella Corporation functions as an antagonistic multinational corporation within the Resident Evil series, the Uroboros Corporation plays a villainous role in the world of Devil May Cry.

In addition to conducting research in fields such as science, medicine, and biology, this company also produces weapons and operates a detainment center located below. (Note: “Hell” has been replaced with “located below” for a more neutral and professional connotation.)

Does Dante find his brother Vergil?

According to the White Rabbit, it has come to light for Dante that his long-lost twin brother Vergil, whom he believed had perished during their childhood, is actually still alive. Eager to reunite with him after so many years, Dante embarks on a quest to locate his twin brother.

Since there’s a possibility, I must venture out to search for him,” Dante tells Lady. “If you’d like, you could join me? We could make an unlikely duo, like in those buddy cop movies – Riggs and Murtaugh, Tango and Cash, Dante and Lady.

Regrettably for Dante, Mary led him to DARKCOM, resulting in the demon hunter being frozen in stasis, thereby thwarting his intentions.

Simultaneously, within the confines of Hell, the figure known as Vergil, or ‘The Knight’, slays the correctional officers at the Uroboros Corporation’s penitentiary. In doing so, he liberates the incarcerated individuals.

As King Mundus declares the freedoms of the imprisoned, he transitions from his monstrous demon appearance to his human self with white hair, holding a katana, thereby expressing his desire for their gratitude.

This hint could possibly foreshadow Vergil’s Black Knight storyline from the video games, since his character appears to be tormented and under the control of King Mundus, as depicted in the ending of Devil May Cry 3.

Should, and whenever, Dante manages to break free from DARKCOM, his family reunion could turn out to be more intricate than he initially anticipated!
