When Doctor Doom assumes global dominance, he forms an alternate version of the Avengers to execute his agenda, heralding a new era titled “One World Under Doom“. This epoch is reshaping the Marvel Universe, with numerous spin-off tales and fresh comics emerging to depict the responses of heroes and villains to Doctor Doom’s power grab. One of the series debuting during this period is “Superior Avengers“, penned by writer Steve Foxe and illustrated by Luca Maresca and Kyle Hotz. As suggested by its title, “Superior Avengers” comprises a team of Earth’s top heroes who are loyal to Doctor Doom. Although the lineup features familiar names, the figures claiming to be heroes might not embody their original virtues.
In our conversation with Steve Foxe, ComicBook delved into the connection between the series ‘Superior Avengers’ and ‘One World Under Doom’. We uncovered insights on how Kristoff Vernard, Doctor Doom’s adopted son, contributes to the formation of the Superior Avengers. Additionally, we explored Doctor Doom’s perspective towards this team, compared it to past deceptive villain groups such as the Thunderbolts and Dark Avengers, discussed the choice of villains within the Superior Avengers, and much more. Lastly, we were granted an exclusive sneak peek at the interior pages for ‘Superior Avengers’ #1 by Luca Maresca.
Intriguing Question: Why has Doom opted for assembling a Superior Avengers team, rather than a group linked to himself, considering that he chose names reminiscent of Earth’s strongest heroes instead of something more self-referential in the One World Under Doom project?
Steve Foxe: In the first issue, you’ll notice that this project was initially conceived by Kristoff Vernard, not Doom himself. It seems Doom might have a tendency to believe he can handle everything on his own – after all, he constructed an entire fleet of robots resembling himself. Delegating tasks isn’t really his strong suit.
Readers of “One World Under Doom” #1 are aware that Doom has exploited situations to make Earth’s Mightiest Heroes appear less effective in public opinion. The idea of him assembling his own Avengers team, one that tackles global issues according to his strategies, is intriguing. It offers another chance to expose the flaws of his rivals. However, if Kristoff successfully carries out the plan as expected by his adoptive father, this could be the case.
How does Kristoff Vernard, Doctor Doom’s son, perceive his assignment of forming the Superior Avengers? Moreover, how has it been aiding Kristoff in discovering a fresh position within the Marvel Universe and under the regime of “One World Under Doom”?
Initially, Kristoff suggested the project, yet it doesn’t lack any sense of responsibility. Anything associated with his father’s name bears the heavy scrutiny of Doom’s gaze. Previously, Doom had been a firm but understanding father for Kristoff, but he’s not someone you’d want to let down. Currently, Kristoff is setting ambitious goals, which means if he fails, he has a lot to lose.
Kristoff has been a captivating figure to delve into, given his extensive background in the Marvel Universe, yet he often finds himself on the periphery when writers aren’t deeply invested in him. His father’s influence casts such a towering shadow that it can be easy for him to become obscured. However, this very aspect makes his storyline intriguing, and we couldn’t overlook the opportunity to examine how significant changes like “One World Under Doom” would affect one of the extremely few individuals who are close to Victor von Doom.
The Superior Avengers team shares similarities with groups such as the Thunderbolts and the Dark Avengers, where supposedly villainous characters masqueraded as heroes. However, what makes the Superior Avengers unique compared to these other teams?
It’s clear that we couldn’t pull off the “posing as someone else” trick a third time, given the adage about fooling someone twice being easy but three times being difficult. Although it’s accurate to say that Superior Avengers shares similarities with books like Dark Avengers, it differs in that the characters shown on the cover – brilliantly designed by Luca Maresca – are indeed who they seem. The reasons behind their actions and what they’re doing here, or what they’re trying to escape from, is where things might become more intricate.
A key difference between the Superior Avengers and previous teams lies in the fact that they’ve never had a Sorcerer Supreme guiding them. Unlike the Thunderbolts, who generally shared common goals, or the Dark Avengers, who were distrustful of one another, the Superior Avengers are fighting for a cause championed by Kristoff’s father. The extent of their loyalty will influence the storyline and ultimately decide Kristoff’s destiny. However, it’s only a matter of time before secrets are exposed to a Sorcerer Supreme…
Informally speaking, how were the discussions regarding the selection of villains for the Superior Avengers lineup? Had the choices been made prior to your task, or did you have some input in deciding which ones would join?
Initially, very little about the book, even its title, was finalized when editor Wil Moss initially contacted us regarding a “Doom’s Avengers” project for OWUD. The book’s development, from conception to eventual shelf placement, underwent numerous discussions and brainstorming sessions as we strived to make it distinctive, thrilling, and worthwhile.
When it comes to selecting the team, one character that instantly caught my attention was a fresh take on a female version of Killmonger. I believed she had immense potential to bring a unique twist to the established storyline, and perhaps even engage in an exciting confrontation with a certain princess.
In my writing, I aimed to challenge preconceived notions by giving certain characters unexpected names such as “Abomination” and “Onslaught.” The intrigue lies in discovering the true nature of these characters once they are introduced. I won’t reveal too much about them, but delving into their distinctive personalities has been a delightful aspect of writing this book, particularly because Luca excelled at designing each character from the get-go, often on his initial attempt.
To conclude, what aspects of Superior Avengers issues are you especially eager for the fans to discover and enjoy when they start reading them?
Above all else, I’m eager for people to witness the effort Luca has poured into this book. The style of this book is heavily influenced by the grandiose superhero actions from the early 2000s, and Luca has truly grasped my vision. This book features some of the most epic, jaw-dropping action sequences I’ve ever scripted in my career at Marvel. To add a touch of balance, we’ve also included some passionate romantic scenes.
Additionally, we’re fortunate to have the esteemed Kyle Hotz among us. Unlike Luca, Kyle infuses the book with an unique style, making it an exciting experience for me, as a writer, to explore this difference in narrative expression.
As a film enthusiast, I must admit that this isn’t your typical pleasant story or group, but they’ve managed to create something extraordinary – beyond charming, if you will. The talented artists behind the scenes, including the writers, illustrators, and letterers, have truly outdone themselves. Brace yourself for an entertaining ride with some less-than-savory characters.
