Doctor Who and Line of Duty stars in first look at new drama Bookish

As a seasoned cinema enthusiast with a penchant for British detective dramas and a soft spot for period pieces, the upcoming series “Bookish” has piqued my interest significantly. The star-studded cast, led by the talented Mark Gatiss, promises an engaging watch that I can’t wait to sink my teeth into.

For the first time, we’ve caught a glimpse of Mark Gatiss’ new U&Original series titled Bookish. In this production, our beloved Sherlock actor assumes the role of the sharp-witted and elegant character, Gabriel Book.

The upcoming detective series, due for broadcast on Alibi next year, boasts a well-known cast. Polly Walker from “Bridgerton” portrays Trottie, the wife of the main character, while Joely Richardson (“The Gentlemen”), Daniel Mays (“The Long Shadow”), and Paul McGann (“Doctor Who“) join as guest stars, respectively playing Sandra Dare, Eric Wellbeloved, and Mr. Kind.

A multitude of fresh photos display scenes from the upcoming series, encompassing a radiant Book seated at his desk, engulfed by stacks of books, and Mays (depicted below), looking startled in his butcher’s shop, evidently taken aback by something that happened there.

Additionally, McGann exudes elegance while standing by what seems like an opulent hotel lobby desk.

As a film enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that some fantastic talents are joining the cast of Bookish! Connor Finch, known for his role in Everything I Know About Love, will be playing Jack. Elliot Levey, recognized from We Were the Lucky Ones and Quiz, will take on the role of Inspector Bliss. Blake Harrison, who’s been seen in Still Up and World on Fire, will portray Sergeant Morris, while Buket Kömür, a familiar face from Our House, will bring Nora to life. Can’t wait to see these brilliant actors on screen!

Additionally, Michael Workéyè from “This is Going to Hurt”, Luke Norris known for “The Girl Before”, and Jonas Nay famous for “Deutschland 83” will also be joining the cast.

The synopsis reveals that “Bookish” is slated as a “detective drama brimming with a fast-paced, fashionable blend of post-war nostalgia and the carefree, exhilarating spirit of the era.

In London, 1946, a thrilling, perilous, and unpredictable backdrop unfolds for this fresh detective series, centered around the witty and suave character of Gabriel Book (Gatiss), who serves as an unconventional consultant detective to the local police force.

With countless books filling his store, he has access to enough wisdom to unravel even the trickiest mysteries of crime.

The story proceeds with the character possessing a group of endearing, flawed outcasts who find solace in his unofficial guardianship, encouragement, and guidance. His spouse, Trottie (Walker), operates the neighboring wallpaper store.

She’s an engaging explorer, and Book holds her in deep affection, though not romantically. They are partners in a ‘lavender’ relationship – a disguise for Book’s homosexuality during a period when being openly gay was against the law.

In this six-episode series, we’ll delve into three significant cases, each spanning across two episodes. So buckle up and get ready to join Ghost on his journeys, assisting the police with some intense detective work!

In addition to playing the main role in the show, Gatiss has also co-written it alongside Matthew Sweet.

Bookish will be directed by Carolina Giammetta (Suspect).

Bookish will air on Alibi in 2025.
