Doctor Who Boss Reveals Why Classic Monsters Are Taking a Break – But Promises Easter Eggs

The iconic character Doctor Who will be back on our screens with fresh perils for the Time Lord and companions to conquer. However, the showrunner Russell T Davies hinted that there would be subtle winks and reminders of the series’ history.

In the shows from last year, there were frequent references to the Doctor’s granddaughter Susan, played by Carole Ann Ford, who was a main character throughout the series from 1963 to 1964. This brought great joy to the fans.

Stepping into the cinema of time and space once more, I couldn’t help but wonder if the newest season would pay homage to the illustrious past of Doctor Who. To my delight, showrunner Chris Chibnall confirmed that we will indeed be treated to “subtle winks” reminiscent of the series’ profound history.

Even though he has a fondness for the old characters from the series, Davies shared that he’s eager to create fresh monsters and adversaries, preferring not to solely depend on the familiar rogue’s gallery.

I’m moving towards something new, not focusing on the Daleks, Cybermen, or the Master anymore. This change is partly because my last story, “The Power of the Doctor” in 2022, featured all three of them alongside Jodie Whittaker in a single episode, which was fantastic. But after such an event, it just makes sense to explore a fresh direction.

Instead of focusing on major events, I find joy in small details like subtle gestures, hints, or references that remind me of a character from Drahvin. When someone makes such an observation, it brings a smile to my face. I appreciate these little nods and Easter eggs – they add a unique touch to the storyline today, I believe.

In the next season of Doctor Who, The Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and fresh companion Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) will face numerous powerful enemies throughout different eras and dimensions. Among them is Mr Ring-a-Ding, a cartoon character brought to life by Alan Cumming’s voice, who manages to break free into the real world. Simultaneously, a hidden entity aims to prevent Belinda from returning to Earth.

Doctor Who is set to premiere on BBC One this coming Saturday, April 12th, at 6:50 pm local time. For viewers in the United Kingdom, fresh episodes can be accessed starting at 8 am every Saturday on BBC iPlayer. For those residing outside of the UK, the series will become available on Disney+.
