Currently, there’s a lot of chatter about Doctor Who, and with lower viewership during the most recent season (according to Deadline), some are expressing concerns about its future. One of the main uncertainties revolves around lead actor Ncuti Gatwa, sparked by a report from The Sun that claimed Gatwa had been “eliminated” following the show’s ratings drop. However, the BBC labeled this report as completely fabricated. Interestingly, The Sun also hinted that Doctor Who would be taking a break after Season 15 ends, and it’s this part that seems a bit vague.
Currently, there’s no confirmation about whether Doctor Who will be renewed for another season. The BBC won’t make any decisions about this until after Season 15 is completed and aired. Additionally, Disney+ has yet to express any thoughts on its involvement with the show, as it co-produces it outside of the UK.
Regarding the current break in the Doctor Who series, showrunner Russell T Davies has added more intrigue to the situation in a recent interview with BBC Newsround. In this conversation, Davies likened Doctor Who to the timeless tale of Robin Hood, hinting at a potential hiatus in the storyline while emphasizing that “no good idea ever dies”. However, it’s worth noting that scripts for season 16 have already been written, with three different writers contributing to this upcoming season. One script, in particular, has reached draft six according to Davies’ comments to Dr Who Magazine.
A BBC representative has clarified that a decision about season 16 will be made after season 15 has finished airing, but they also hinted at more “Doctor Who” content in the future. The representative added, “Previously, we mentioned that a decision on season [16] would only be made following the completion of season [15]. Any other reports are simply speculation. Our agreement with Disney+ includes 26 episodes, and there’s still an entire spin-off series, ‘The War Between the Land and the Sea’, to be shown. As for any further details about the Doctor and future storylines, we don’t usually comment on those matters.
As a movie enthusiast, I must mention that although the BBC claims Ncuti Gatwa hasn’t been dismissed from the series, they haven’t refuted the rumors he might have left. At this point, neither Gatwa nor his representatives has spoken up about it, and no formal announcements have been made one way or another.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a sense of unease when I look at the ratings for our favorite show. The initial seven-day viewership numbers for the first half of season 15 are significantly lower compared to season 13. To put it into perspective, season 13 kicked off with an impressive 5.8 million viewers, but by episode 4, that number had dropped to a still respectable 4.5 million viewers. Season 14 saw a decline, starting with 4 million viewers for the first episode and recovering slightly to reach 4 million viewers by episode 4. However, season 15 is struggling to match even these lower numbers. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a turnaround in the ratings.
In its initial airing, Season 15 attracted 3.6 million viewers, but by episode 4, that number dropped to 2.8 million viewers. Notably, the average viewership across all three seasons has seen a significant decline. For instance, Season 13 averaged 5 million viewers, followed by 3.9 million in Season 14. So far, Season 15 is managing only about 3.1 million viewers on average.
It’s hoped that we’ll have more clarity about the situation soon – be it another season with Gatwa as the main character, a reboot with a new Doctor, or perhaps a brief hiatus for the franchise. Fans are eagerly waiting to learn which direction it will take, but fortunately, there’s still some fresh Doctor Who content to enjoy until we reach that point of decision.
