Doctor Who Christmas special 7-day ratings confirmed

During the Christmas week, the viewership statistics for a span of seven days were disclosed, and it was found that the Christmas special of Doctor Who titled “Joy to the World” ranked as the sixth most-watched television program of the entire week.

As a devoted cinephile, I found myself among a crowd of 5.9 million fellow viewers who tuned in to catch the latest episode, but alas, it didn’t quite manage to outrank some other popular titles. Gavin & Stacey: The Finale, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, two installments of Call the Midwife, and even the Outnumbered Christmas special drew more attention on this occasion.

Compared to the series’ past, the 2023 Christmas special, “The Church on Ruby Road,” attracted approximately 7.4 million viewers during a span of seven days.

It’s worth mentioning that this episode marked Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor for the first time in its entirety, making it potentially more intriguing due to novelty.

In the show “Joy to the World,” Gatwa teamed up with guest star Nicola Coughlan, while the Doctor encountered a puzzling briefcase inside a Time Hotel.

In one memorable scene of the episode, the Doctor developed a strong bond with Anita, a staff member at a terrestrial hotel, portrayed by Stephanie de Whalley – however, it was later revealed that this relationship was not originally part of Steven Moffat’s storyline.

“Originally that was very different, and Anita barely featured in it,” Moffat explained.

As a cinephile, let me share my thoughts: The original plotline underwent a notable transformation in the doctor’s role throughout the storyline. Initially, I envisioned him traversing the globe, but the final version took a different route.

This year, we can anticipate another season of eight episodes featuring Doctor Who, who will be joining forces with a fresh companion named Belinda Chandra, portrayed by actress Varada Sethu.

Additionally, we’re anticipating the debut of an exciting new series titled “The War Between the Land and the Sea.” However, showrunner Russell T Davies hinted that viewers might need to exercise some patience before it makes its appearance on screens.
