As a lifelong Doctor Who enthusiast who’s been traversing the time vortex since the days of Tom Baker, these new images for Joy to the World have sent my TARDIS-loving heart racing! I can hardly contain my excitement as we approach Christmas Day and the arrival of the festive special.
As Christmas Day approaches, it brings Doctor Who fans one step nearer to watching this year’s holiday special titled “Joy to the World.
On December 25th at 5:10pm, a one-hour episode titled “Time-Traveling Hotel” will broadcast on BBC One. This intriguing production, penned by Steven Moffat, revolves around an innovative hotel that employs time travel to accommodate guests from different eras in history when its rooms are not booked.
Currently, we’ve received an array of fresh photos from the upcoming special, offering glimpses into Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal of the Doctor, Nicola Coughlan as temporary companion Joy, and various other guest actors featured in the episode.
In the picture above, you can see the Doctor and Joy closely examining a case that resembles the briefcase associated with Villengard, an old adversary who specializes in weapon production, as we’ve learned from a prior clip.
Apart from appearing in this year’s Boom episode (written by Moffat), Villengard has also shown up in the final episode featuring Peter Capaldi’s Twelfth Doctor, Twice Upon a Time, and was mentioned in Moffat’s debut Who story, The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances.
Freshly unveiled photographs acquaint us with Jonathan Aris’s character as the hotel manager in Silurian times, a role he played earlier in a video clip this year, along with Joel Fry’s character Trev, who can be seen conversing with the Doctor in what seems to be the hotel lobby.

Another image sees the Doctor wearing a robe, holding a newspaper and mug and heading back into the TARDIS, while another introduces us to Sylvia, as played by Niamh Marie Smith.

Based on the cast list, it’s revealed that Sylvia shares the last name ‘Trench’ with the first female Bond character, who debuted in the James Bond movie series. It’s unclear if this shared surname is mere coincidence or if there’s a deliberate link between the two characters.

Another image depicts Coughlan’s character Joy standing near what seems like a cave wall, showing signs of fear.

In the upcoming season, Coughlan will appear solely in a single episode, whereas Gatwa will be accompanied by a fresh character named Belinda, portrayed by Varada Sethu. Additionally, Millie Gibson’s character, Ruby Sunday, is expected to make a reappearance.
