Doctor Who Christmas special will solve “longest-standing mystery”

As a lifelong Whovian with memories of Christmases spent huddled around the television set, eagerly anticipating the Doctor Who special, I can confidently say that Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat have outdone themselves this year. The combination of adventure, mystery, comedy, and tragedy in the Christmas special is a testament to their unparalleled storytelling abilities.

Between the years 2005 to 2017, under the guidance of Russell T Davies followed by Steven Moffat, Doctor Who aired an annual Christmas special. For some time afterwards, the show tried out New Year’s episodes instead. However, when Davies returned in 2023, he declared that he broke through a barrier and demanded that the series return to telling festive tales once more.

The Doctor is extremely Christmas-themed,” he clarifies before the latest incarnation of The Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa, embarks on his second holiday escapade. “It’s warm and inviting, much like a family gathering. It offers both humor and drama.

According to Moffat, who was tasked by Davies to pen this year’s special, it indeed feels very Christmassy. He elaborates that just as Santa Claus resides in a child’s imagination, so does the Doctor. He might seem grumpy towards adults, but he adores children. In essence, Moffat suggests that the Doctor and Santa have always been a perfect pair.

So far, Davies has penned six Doctor Who Christmas specials, bringing the total number of Moffat’s episodes, including this latest one, up to nine. Yet, this hasn’t dampened Davies’ enthusiasm or ambition when it comes to crafting his holiday-themed scripts.

This year, according to Moffat, the Doctor will finally reveal the answer to the question you’ve been curious about since your childhood. This isn’t just a riddle that has puzzled the Doctor Who universe, but one that spans the entire cosmos. Tune in on Christmas Day!

The unknown nature of that enigma persists, indeed, as an enigma itself. However, we are aware that this particular episode, named “Joy to the World,” takes place in a unique establishment called a “time hotel.” This special lodging enables the Doctor to journey to Everest Base Camp during the 1950s, aboard the Orient Express, through the Second World War, the year 4202, and into ancient eras. As usual, he won’t be delving into the secrets alone.

Following Millie Gibson’s departure from “Ruby Sunday” earlier this year, Nicola Coughlan, known for her role in Bridgerton and co-starring with Gatwa in Barbie, will be taking over the role of Joy during Christmas. A new permanent companion is set to join next year.

In RT’s sneak peek image, we find the pair in a shabby bed and breakfast, facing a menacing suitcase locked onto Joy’s arm – the exact item the Doctor is pursuing throughout history. “I thought, since it’s set in a hotel, the villain must be luggage!” Moffat chuckles.
