Actress Anneke Wills, famously known for her role in classic Doctor Who, expressed her desire to see the missing story “The Smugglers” brought to life through animation. However, she clarified that there’s no confirmation yet about an actual animated production being underway.
The fourth season’s premiere episode of the series unfolded in four segments during September and October of 1966. In this tale, actor William Hartnell, playing the First Doctor, was joined by his companion Polly, portrayed by Wills. This dynamic duo found themselves embroiled in an adventure that led them to encounter pirates in Cornwall during the 17th century.
Since the complete series is no longer available, there’s speculation among fans that it might be the next lost tale to be brought back to life, featuring updated animations synchronizing with the existing audio tracks.
However, a recent update on Will’s official Facebook page clarified that although it remains her favorite tale, she is unsure if any plans are underway to animate it at the moment.
It’s been whispered among people that Anneke might have mentioned that Doctor Who – The Smugglers is being turned into an animation.
Anneke clarifies that she didn’t express what was attributed to her; her preferred tale is “The Smuggler’s Story,” which she dreams might get animated, although she’s unsure if it ever will. Therefore, remember not to blindly trust online information!
There’s been chatter for quite some time that The Smugglers could receive an update soon, but when queried about it in 2023, Paul Hembury, responsible for the animations, remained vague about the details of upcoming story arcs.
At that moment, he expressed: “I truly wish I could affirm my ability to comply – unfortunately, it’s not feasible as of now. We lack an overarching five, ten-year plan. Instead, we tackle each project individually.
To be completely honest, it’s uncertain if we’ll ever reach a point where we’ve accomplished everything on the list. However, something new is definitely on its way.
Doctor Who is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
