Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode The Interstellar Song Contest.
Preparing for the Doctor Who season finale’s two-episode climax, the risks at hand are now clear, and sadly, Earth seems to be in grave danger.
This season has subtly suggested and alluded to Earth’s demise, but what’s surprising is that the announcement comes from an unlikely harbinger of doom – a holographic Eurovision commentator named Graham Norton.
In the most recent installment, titled The Interstellar Song Contest, taking place 900 years from now, a holographic version of Graham is called to the museum section of the Harmony Arena after Belinda (Varada Sethu) speaks of her origin – Earth.
Speaking about our world, Graham mentions that it’s an ancient dwelling place for humanity, along with animals such as dogs, cats, polar bears, and measles.

However, in an ominous turn, he then adds: “Poor old Earth died many years ago.”
Speaking of dates, I was instructed to provide details, and I’d be happy to oblige. According to historical records, May 24th, 2025, marks a significant event – it was the day Belinda departed from our beloved planet Earth.
Graham goes on to say, “They claim the planet shattered into rocks, debris, and ash. What remained after the collapse of a civilization that vanished in an instant were the sifted memories. The reason for this catastrophe remains unidentified.
This season, there have been hints throughout that Earth is being destroyed. Scenes show famous Earth landmarks drifting away in space, while characters from a future time seem unaware of humanity’s existence, suggesting our extinction may have occurred.
Regarding potential reasons for Earth’s devastation, there are numerous theories. However, our suspicion points towards Mrs. Flood (Anita Dobson), given her apparent determination to wreak chaos within the Doctor’s realm.
Now that the Doctor and Belinda have hastily departed in the TARDIS, with the vindicator fully charged and prepared to return them to the specific time, it appears we are on the verge of discovering the truth.
The Doctor’s latest adventures will air this coming Saturday, May 24th. In the UK, you can catch these new episodes starting at 8am on BBC iPlayer, with a repeat broadcast on BBC One later in the day. For those outside of the UK, the series is available on Disney+.
