Renowned Doctor Who director Waris Hussein has voiced his hope that the character of The Doctor, a staple in British television, will delve deeper into themes of queerness within the show’s narrative.
As a devoted film enthusiast, I’m well-known for having directed the groundbreaking first Doctor Who serial, “An Unearthly Child,” back in 1963, and later, a significant portion of the fourth serial, “Marco Polo.
During a chat with the current issue of Doctor Who magazine, Hussein mused about Ncuti Gatwa’s portrayal of the Doctor and questioned whether the weight of responsibility on him might be heavier due to being the first black actor to headline the series.
Nigel Gatwa is not only the first openly LGBTQ+ star to take the lead role in Doctor Who, but he also expressed thoughts about how the sci-fi franchise might portray the character’s sexuality as the Fifteenth Doctor.
Hussein wondered about the thoughts behind Russell T Davies’ writing,” he said. “Where is he guiding this character? What secret is unfolding? If Russell T Davies has made the Doctor gay, does that aspect of his identity come into play? It seems there should be a sense of intrigue among those who encounter the Doctor.
It’s not dismissive to say, “It doesn’t matter.” In fact, it does. Identity, particularly queerness, significantly impacts one’s journey and development. I’ve been raised with this perspective, and it’s deeply ingrained in me. Consequently, such experiences should be reflected in the character of The Doctor. If he is gay, let’s explore that aspect, but don’t compromise the enigma that surrounds him.

Just last week, there was a need for the BBC to reassure Doctor Who enthusiasts that the science fiction show is still on, after a misleading newspaper article erroneously suggested otherwise.
Currently, a representative for Doctor Who has clarified: “The tale you’re hearing isn’t accurate. At this point, Doctor Who hasn’t been put on hold. The choice about season 3 will be determined once season 2 has finished broadcasting.
We’ve agreed to air 26 episodes on Disney Plus, and right now, we’re halfway through that number. As for any further episodes featuring The Doctor, we don’t discuss upcoming storylines.
Currently, enthusiasts of Doctor Who can anticipate Season 15, as recent photos verify the addition of Christopher Chung from Slow Horses as a new character named Cassio.
During the announcement of his role, showrunner Davies expressed that he’s an avid admirer of the Slow Horses series and couldn’t wait to bring Chris on board.
He fully utilizes his power, flair, and abilities in one of our most challenging, grim episodes yet. Regarding whether Cassio is friend or foe to the Doctor, you’ll need to stay tuned to find out, but I assure you, it’s an intense encounter!
