Doctor Who DOP Ernie Vincze dies – Russell T Davies pays tribute to “wonderful” man

As a lifelong movie enthusiast and self-proclaimed Whovian, I can’t help but feel a profound sense of loss upon hearing about the passing of Ernest ‘Ernie’ Vincze. Having grown up watching the Doctor Who reboot, his name is synonymous with some of my most cherished childhood memories. Born in Hungary and with an impressive career that spanned decades, he was not just a cinematographer but a master of his craft who breathed life into our favorite stories.

Memorials are being made for Ernest ‘Ernie’ Vincze, a skilled cinematographer who served as the director of photography on Doctor Who, after his passing at the venerable age of 81.

Born in Hungary, Vincze spent his career working on various television series such as Jeeves and Wooster, Robin Hood, and Waterloo Road. He contributed to a single episode of Holby City in the year 2012 before concluding his professional journey.

In the 2005 reboot of Doctor Who, he served as the director of photography for every episode in the first season, as well as eight episodes from season 2, seven episodes from season 3, and six episodes from season 4.

Additionally, he was involved in creating the specials “The Christmas Invasion,” “The Next Doctor,” and “The Waters of Mars”, as well as two episodes for the spin-off series “The Sarah Jane Adventures.

He’s such an amiable fellow, forever beaming and welcoming. Even during the chilly evenings on The Empty Child and the frenzied determination in The Parting of the Ways, there was Ernie, smiling!

Born in Hungary, his career was extraordinary, spanning projects such as “Escape from Sobibor” and “Shanghai Surprise” with Madonna. In our early days, he may have found us as noisy as squawking chickens, but he graciously helped and guided us, earning our deep affection. Goodnight, Ernie, thank you dearly. #bbcdoctorwho (paraphrased)

For all 13 episodes during Season 1, he was the main contributor. After that, he worked on the series up to 2009. It’s largely due to his efforts that the show appeared more grand and impressive than before as it reappeared on TV screens.

A different admirer expressed sadness upon learning about Ernie Vincze’s death. Cinematographers, or DoPs, often go unacknowledged yet are crucial in both movies and series, and his name will always be connected to some of my cherished childhood TV episodes. Thank you for everything, Ernie!
