*Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode Wish World.*
In the recent episode “Wish World,” Doctor Who brought back another unexpected character return. Specifically, there was an unconventional reunion featuring the Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa.
In this installment, well-known figures stepped into unexpected positions within an alternate Earth envisioned by Conrad Clark (played by Jonah Hauer-King). This was a cunning scheme orchestrated by the Rani (portrayed by Archie Panjabi), who had kidnapped the potent God of Wishes to set her grand plan into motion.
In this particular universe, the Doctor was a common man named John Smith, living with his wife Belinda (Varada Sethu) and their little girl Poppy (Shola Olaitan-Ajiboye). However, uncertainties about his new life gradually caused fissures in the idyllic reality that Conrad had wished for.
It was refreshing to see Rogue, portrayed by Jonathan Groff, deliver a crucial message that helped shatter the mysterious influence at just the right moment.

In a 2024 episode called “Rogue”, Groff’s character was first seen as a bounty hunter who crossed paths with The Doctor in Regency England while an extraterrestrial danger loomed. Initially wary of each other, Rogue and The Doctor soon found themselves drawn together by a deep romantic bond.
However, their bond reached its poignant conclusion, as Rogue chose to forgo the opportunity to remain with the Doctor, instead selflessly giving up this chance to rescue others and was whisked away to a mysterious parallel realm.

It is suggested that the world witnesses Rogue mysteriously appearing on John Smith’s television, implying a strange connection. Later, it is disclosed that Rogue is trapped in some form of tormented realm, foreshadowing potential further troubles for this charming figure.
In simple terms, Rogue says, “Time is limited because they’re approaching, and it seems like this world is collapsing. I’m not sure if I’ll make it through.
After uttering one last heartfelt expression of affection, Rogue vanishes, leaving behind a profound impact. This disappearance sparks an intense preoccupation in the Doctor as he delves into the mystery of how objects, such as mugs, can seemingly pass through tables in this world of wishes – a subtle clue hinting at someone’s uncertainty about their new life.
The Rogue’s communication, along with the Doctor admitting he had a liking for the character on TV, eventually results in the Doctor being apprehended by the police. This is due to Belinda, who had been brainwashed, informing the authorities about the Doctor’s doubts, leading ultimately to a face-off with the Rani.
Is it possible that we haven’t seen the end of Rogue altogether? Might he resurface in the upcoming season finale, “The Reality War”? Or could it be that he was destroyed alongside, presumably, the hell dimension in which he was trapped?
If he manages to escape, it will undoubtedly be a turbulent emotional journey for the Doctor, especially considering his granddaughter Susan (Carole Ann Ford) is standing by as well.
On Saturdays starting May 31st, catch the latest episodes of Doctor Who on BBC iPlayer at 8 am in the United Kingdom. They will also be aired on BBC One later in the day. For viewers outside the UK, you can find the series on Disney+.
