As a lifelong Doctor Who fan who’s seen every episode from Troughton to Jodie Whittaker, I must say that the recent colorized re-edit of The War Games was an absolute delight! The inclusion of Murray Gold’s Master theme during the War Chief’s scenes added a layer of intrigue that was missing in my black-and-white memories.
Tonight (December 23rd), BBC Four premiered a revamped version of the classic Doctor Who series The War Games. This special edition wasn’t just a quick re-cut of the 1969 black-and-white original; it was also colorized. However, what made this presentation particularly unexpected was the introduction of an unanticipated plot development.
In the final tale during Patrick Troughton’s tenure as the Second Doctor, a malevolent character called the War Chief, who is an outcast from the Doctor’s own species, takes center stage. This role was brought to life by Edward Brayshaw.
In essence, they’re both renegade Time Lords, each sporting stylish beards, and they have a habit of aligning themselves with hostile extraterrestrial forces, serving their individual purposes.
In a pivotal moment from the tale, the Doctor (portrayed by Troughton) and the War Chief have their initial encounter, leading the Doctor’s secret identity to be exposed.
In the revised portrayal of the sequence, an updated soundtrack has been incorporated, including the iconic melodies from Murray Gold’s composition for The Master, which resonate powerfully during the tense encounter.
The way I immediately sat up when that music kicked in #TheWarGamesInColour

THE NEW EDIT OF THE WAR GAMES IS CONFIRMING THE WAR CHIEF IS THE MASTER???

It seems they always choose the right moment to play Murray Gold’s Master theme when the War Chief appears on screen, indicating that they are well-versed in their work.

One fan commented, “I think I heard the sound of regeneration as the War Chief was being removed,” and another noted, “Adding the regeneration sound right after the War Chief was zapped was a subtle and cool detail.
Absolutely, for the audience members who prefer to view the War Chief and The Master as distinct characters, these recent edits don’t definitively confirm or deny this theory either way.
Doctor Who: The War Games in Colour is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
