Doctor Who Gets Animated in New Season 2 Trailer

Season 2 of the television series Doctor Who is exploring uncharted territories, featuring at least one world depicted in a vintage 2-D animated design. The preview for this upcoming season was released on Monday, and it showcased an array of peculiar scenes, with the most striking possibly being the Doctor and his companion portrayed in a nostalgic, retro style. This is merely one hint about the tales we can anticipate in this new season, which kicks off on April 12th. In the U.K., the show will exclusively stream on BBC iPlayer, while globally, it will be accessible on Disney+. There are eight fresh episodes to look forward to, boasting an elite cast and crew, and excitement among fans is palpable.

As a fervent admirer, I’m thrilled about the latest sneak peek revealing the grand narrative for The Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa. This preview introduces his new companion, Belinda Chandra, brilliantly played by Varada Sethu. It appears that Belinda finds herself lost in a different dimension of time and space, but as The Doctor elucidates, the beauty of time travel is that there’s no need to rush – we can always take our time to appreciate the journey. In some instances, Belinda seems to be relishing the scenic detours, while in others, the grim reality of her predicament begins to unfold.

In the 1950s-style attire, The Doctor and Belinda find themselves metamorphosed into cartoon characters. A puzzled look graces their faces as a blue-skinned character from the cartoon world exclaims, “Action!” followed by them being enveloped in a beam emanating from a film projector. Miraculously, this transformation renders them as animated likenesses of themselves, simultaneously altering their surroundings.

It’s evident that this moment in the trailer was designed to grab your attention, as it’s where the music stops before building up dramatically. Yet, with eight episode titles but no plot summaries provided yet, it’s challenging to pinpoint exactly when during the season this will happen. The episode that appears most likely to feature this scene is the finale, titled “The Reality War,” which is penned by showrunner Russel T. Davies personally.

In the trailer, other episode titles are also clearly shown – such as “The Interstellar Song Contest,” which is explicitly named and seems to excite both the Doctor and Belinda. The season starts with “The Robot Revolution,” and the trailer provides numerous robots for us to ponder about, since Davies himself wrote that particular episode.

Here in the U.S., more people than ever are tuning into Doctor Who, thanks to its weekly availability on Disney+. With a fresh Doctor and a new companion, it’s an excellent moment for newcomers to jump aboard. Catch up on Ncuti Gatwa’s tenure as the Doctor on Disney+ now, and join us every Saturday starting April 12th for brand-new episodes!
