As a dedicated Whovian who’s been traveling through time and space since the black-and-white era, I must say that the recent re-release of The War Games, complete with a hilarious roast session from our beloved Doctor, was an absolute delight! The addition of modern stars like Capaldi, Tennant, Whittaker, and Smith added a fresh twist to this classic tale, making it feel as if the Doctor himself had come back to criticize his future selves.
This week, the BBC broadcast a revamped, re-edited, and modernized version of the 1969 “Doctor Who” serial titled “The War Games.” Notably, this version includes cameos from Peter Capaldi, David Tennant, Jodie Whittaker, and Matt Smith. The narrative revolves around the second Doctor, portrayed by Patrick Troughton, who discovers details about his future regenerated selves on Earth. A notable addition to the updated scene depicts him reacting with shock and even mocking the actors as he gazes upon his later incarnations.
In its original form, “Doctor Who: The War Games” spanned approximately four hours. On Tuesday, BBC Four aired a revised 9-minute version of it. This abridged version was colorized and simplified, but what truly stood out was the inclusion of newer actors in the regeneration scene. Towards the end of the story, other Time Lords sentence the Doctor to live on Earth. They also elaborate on the regeneration process that would become a staple of the series. However, the Doctor isn’t happy, particularly when they display images of some of his future regenerated forms.
Upon seeing Capaldi on screen, he exclaims he’s too old; Tennant, he considers too thin; Whittaker, he deems too young. Smith, he disapproves of at first glance, remarking ‘That just won’t work!’ He continues in frustration: ‘This is absurd! Is this the best you could find? Never have I seen such a remarkable group!’
Audience members found humor not only in the nostalgic appearance of the character, but also in the clever jab at all the actors embedded within it. What followed was the truly impressive part – producers skillfully interwove footage featuring the Third Doctor, portrayed by Jon Pertwee, to create a smooth transition during the regeneration sequence. Remarkably, this ingenious edit was initially fan-made, later endorsed officially by The Confession Dial YouTube channel, with the BBC’s approval.
Producers aim that revised edits such as this one will encourage fresh audiences to delve into the extensive past of the Doctor Who series, making it more approachable with a compact duration and enhanced modern visuals included. As this is the last Doctor Who serial ever filmed in black and white, colorizing it is quite significant.
For fans, finding all the content depending on their location can sometimes be a challenge. In the United States, Max has 13 seasons of ‘Doctor Who’, starting from the debut of the Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston, up to the Thirteenth Doctor, Whittaker. This period is commonly known as “Modern Who” in the fandom. The earlier seasons, or “Classic Who”, can be accessed in the U.S. through Britbox and Tubi, though the latter offers content with ads. Lastly, the current season featuring Ncuti Gatwa as the Fourteenth Doctor is exclusively available on Disney+.
Regarding “Doctor Who: The War Games,” it’s unfortunate that the revised version has only been aired and streamed within the UK so far. But, there’s good news! The BBC has disclosed intentions to make this special available for purchase as early as 2025.
