Warning: Major spoilers ahead for Doctor Who episode Lucky Day.
In the latest season of Doctor Who, there are several puzzling elements; however, one major enigma that arose this year has now been resolved.
In the thrilling commencement of The Robot Revolution, I found myself on a mission, pursuing Nurse Belinda Chandra (Varada Sethu) across both our present-day Earth and an alien realm, as she had been snatched away by mechanical beings. However, my quest for her was driven by more than just curiosity – there was a reason behind it.
The Doctor clarified to Bel, “I’ve heard about you from another source, and there’s quite a tale behind it all. I need to watch my pacing and sequence of events.” He added, “However, they mentioned your name, hinting at your significant role.
So, who told the Doctor about Belinda and tasked him with finding her?
In the recently aired episode titled “Lucky Day,” we are treated to the unveiling of events as The Doctor and Belinda find themselves in London on New Year’s Day, 2007, embarking on another attempt to return her home.
In this setting, the character we encounter is a youth named Conrad Clark, portrayed by Benjamin Chivers. His fleeting exchange with the Doctor proves to be significant and far-reaching in its consequences.

As a cinephile, let me put it this way: I re-encounter the grown-up Conrad, now portrayed by Jonah Hauer-King, seeming like a gentle soul, obsessed with aliens and hosting a podcast. He even dabbles in romance with Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). However, beneath his innocent facade, he’s revealed to be a sly trickster who manipulates digital platforms to spread harmful conspiracy theories for personal profit.
In Ruby’s sorrow following Conrad’s deceit, the Doctor encounters the imprisoned wrongdoer. Yet, it’s a Doctor from an earlier phase of his life narrative, a time when he and Ruby had separated and before they met Bel, as shown in The Robot Revolution.
The Time Lord grumbles angrily, accusing Conrad of betrayal, to which Conrad responds sarcastically, saying, “With as many friends as you’ve had, have you made acquaintance with Belinda Chandra yet?

As a film enthusiast, I found myself puzzled when Conrad mentioned someone named “he.” The Doctor refused to delve deeper into the subject, but instead dropped some intriguing hints. He suggested that this individual would meet an untimely end, passing away at 49 from a heart attack while simmering in rage and toxicity within the confines of a prison cell.
“You aren’t even a figment, just ashes on the wind,” he spits.
The final scene finds the Doctor leaving, while mysterious character Mrs. Flood (played by Anita Dobson) appears at Conrad’s cell, suggesting she may be there to release him. Does this action alter the destiny the Doctor predicted for him?
Moving forward, it’s clear now that Conrad Clark was the one who initiated the Doctor’s encounter with Belinda.
Although much remains unanswered about this season’s mysteries, questions such as “Who is Mrs. Flood?”, “Why can’t the Doctor bring Belinda back to Earth in 2025?”, and “Is it more than coincidence that Belinda crossed paths with the Doctor after he had previously encountered her descendant, Mundy Flynn?” still linger.
Four more episodes to go until we find out…
The Doctor’s latest adventures will air on BBC One this coming Saturday, 10th May. In the UK, fresh episodes can be watched starting at 8am every Saturday on BBC iPlayer. For those living outside the UK, you can catch up with the series on Disney+.
