As a lifelong Doctor Who fan and someone who grew up during Tom Baker’s tenure as the Fourth Doctor, I can wholeheartedly say that he was, without a doubt, one of the greatest Time Lords to ever grace our screens. His charismatic performance and distinctive voice have left an indelible mark on the show, making him a beloved figure in the world of Doctor Who.
It’s been 50 years since Tom Baker’s first full Doctor Who serial, Robot.
During that period, he has emerged as one of the most recognized and adored actors to portray The Doctor, while also maintaining the record for the longest tenure as the Time Lord.
From 1974 to 1981, Baker portrayed the character of the Fourth Doctor across seven uninterrupted series. This long-lasting tenure is frequently called the “gilded era” or “golden age” of the show.
To honor the 50-year milestone of the show “Robot” that first aired on December 28, 1974, TopMob has released a complimentary digital magazine titled Tom Baker: 50 Years in Time and Space. This publication is packed with old interviews and visuals featuring the actor himself.
Some works were previously featured in TopMob, but there are also unpublished shots, such as a few depicting the actor in costume.
The following image sequence features Baker, who is not in his character’s attire this time, but remains posed outside the famous TARDIS. These pictures were captured by Chris Ridley back in 1975, which was a year deep into Baker’s portrayal of the Doctor.

Previously, Baker, nearing his 91st birthday, marked the 60th anniversary of Doctor Who with TopMob.
He remarked, “Wasn’t anyone a failure as Doctor Who?” At that moment. However, let’s not be unfair to anyone. And honestly, I wasn’t.” (or “I wasn’t the one who failed as Doctor Who, was I?” he said at the time. But let’s not jump to conclusions. And no, I didn’t.”)

Inquired about any tips for Ncuti Gatwa, the actor portraying the current version of The Doctor, he also offered this suggestion: “Being aware of anything can be somewhat risky when playing Doctor Who.
It’s more advantageous to be unaware and kind-hearted. The secret lies in being gracious when interacting with others, as this reduces your responsibilities significantly since you don’t always have to take charge of every situation.
