Doctor Who legend’s cameo was cut from Netflix sci-fi

As a film enthusiast with a soft spot for British TV and Doctor Who, I must say I was quite intrigued by the news that a former Doctor Who actor was set to make a cameo in Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, only for it to be cut from the final version.

It has been disclosed that a guest appearance by a renowned Doctor Who actor was originally planned for Netflix’s The Three-Body Problem, but ultimately removed from the series.

3 Body Problem boasted an illustrious ensemble featuring Benedict Wong, Liam Cunningham, Jonathan Pryce, and John Bradley, alongside guest appearances by notable figures hailing from the realm of British television, such as Mark Gatiss and Phil Wang.

However, another well-known figure from British television almost made a guest appearance in the series. The showrunners revealed they had planned for an actor who portrayed the Doctor to make a cameo, but this specific scene ultimately got postponed or discarded.

Reflecting on scenes that didn’t quite make it, co-creator Alexander Woo shared with The Hollywood Reporter: “There was a scene that was full of excitement and really resonated with our audience, offering a delightful cameo opportunity for an actor I can’t name yet. I choose to keep this secret to spare any feelings of disappointment for someone who didn’t get to be part of the show.”

“Indeed, he was once the Doctor from Doctor Who. Admirers of this series might have taken pleasure in it. Yet, for the sake of keeping the remainder of the episode coherent, we needed to move past that connection.”

DB Weiss joked: “Jon Pertwee – 124 years old and still showed up.”

Although the Doctor Who legend didn’t qualify, the series was filled with an abundance of talent in the realm of science fiction and fantasy. Interestingly, several actors from Game of Thrones were reunited on this show, which isn’t surprising given that Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss played a role in its adaptation along with Woo.

Initially, it was confessed that the authors felt “frightened” about transforming the renowned novel by Cixin Liu into a story.

Weiss acknowledged that the sense of it potentially being overwhelming was something we were accustomed to. This was similar to how we felt about Game of Thrones, combined with immense enthusiasm for the prospects of its continuation, should we be able to make it a reality.
