Doctor Who moving Christmas special makes director cry every time

As a cinephile with decades of television viewing under my belt, I must say that the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special, Joy to the World, has piqued my interest immensely. The prospect of a time-traveling conundrum, dinosaurs, and a good dose of emotion is simply irresistible.

Many folks eagerly anticipate the upcoming Christmas special of Doctor Who, as it promises an emotionally charged journey that resembles a thrilling roller coaster ride.

The episode is incredibly emotional, stirring up feelings so profound that director Alex Pillai finds himself tearing up each time he re-watches it.

In conversation with the BBC, Pillai described Joy to the World as follows: “You’ll find laughter, tears, a mind-bending time travel mystery, and even a dinosaur in this production – that’s my short summary for it.

“Steven has written such a powerhouse episode, so much happens and it’s all very understandable.

You’re chuckling, but it always makes me tear up. I can effortlessly rewatch it over a hundred times, and each time it still gets to me.

In this special holiday episode, I step back into my beloved role as the Fifteenth Doctor, and I’m thrilled to be joined by the remarkable Nicola Coughlan as our new character, Joy. The legendary Steven Moffat, who has steered the TARDIS before, is back at the helm, penning this extraordinary tale. The story unfolds around a hotel group that’s discovered the secret of time travel.

“The upcoming episode features the introduction of Joy, played by Nicola Coughlan (from Bridgerton and Derry Girls). In 2024, she decides to book a hotel room in London, but soon finds that her seemingly tranquil visit is anything but routine.

When Joy unveils a hidden entrance to the Time Hotel, she encounters peril, dinosaurs, and the Doctor. However, an ominous scheme is taking shape worldwide, perfectly timed for Christmas.

Whereabouts can we find the Doctor currently? What’s happening inside Joy’s hotel room? An ancient foe of the Doctor’s is creeping around in the shadows, and the fate of all human history teeters on a precipice. Will the Doctor be able to rescue Christmas for everyone, simultaneously across the globe?

Speaking about his initial response upon reading the episode for the first time, Pillai exclaimed: “I completely spaced my train stop! As I was commuting back home from London, the script came in, I popped on my earphones, and honestly, I thought Steven Moffat had penned this episode specifically for me. It encompasses everything I adore about Doctor Who and drama as a whole – there’s a sweet romance, a thrilling race against time, and the dialogues are smart, quick-witted, and hilarious. I felt an incredibly strong bond with it.

Despite the heartfelt emotions throughout the holiday special, Moffat has mentioned that there’s room for laughter as well. In a conversation with SFX magazine, he stated: “It contains your typical Christmas cheer, so I guess it veers towards the slightly more comedic side, to some extent.

In reality, it becomes quite touching, and there’s an enjoyable aspect too, as within the broader storyline, the Doctor has recently lost a friend.

He added: “It’s whimsical and heartwarming and emotional. It’s not Blink. That’s how they review all my episodes – it’s not Blink!”
