Doctor Who overnight ratings revealed for Christmas special Joy to the World

As someone who has been a dedicated fan of Doctor Who for decades, I must say that the overnight ratings for this year’s Christmas special were a bit underwhelming. Don’t get me wrong, 4.11 million viewers is nothing to sneeze at, but when you consider the sheer excitement and anticipation leading up to it, I had hoped for a higher turnout. However, as we all know, these numbers don’t include catch-up viewing, so there’s still hope that the figure will rise.

For the upcoming 2024 Christmas special of Doctor Who titled “Joy to the World”, the overnight viewing figures are now available.

On Christmas Day at 5:10pm, the episode written by Steven Moffat on BBC One attracted 4.11 million viewers based on initial ratings from BARB.

It must be noted that this is not the full story as it doesn’t include viewers who will be watching on catch-up. This number is expected to rise when the seven-day consolidated viewing figures come in.

In the most recent holiday-themed escapade, the Fifteenth Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, along with guest companion Joy (played by Nicola Coughlan), found themselves at the Time Hotel. Their mission was to thwart Villengard, a mischievous antagonist, from cultivating a star that would ultimately lead to the devastation of mankind.

This episode marked the Doctor’s acceptance of Ruby Sunday’s (played by Millie Gibson) departure, and viewers got a sneak peek into the future of the science fiction show with a trailer featuring Gatwa reprising his role for the upcoming season.

On Christmas Day 2024, the Gavin and Stacey finale emerged as the clear victor, boasting overnight viewership of 12.3 million. This beloved James Corden and Ruth Jones comedy graced our screens once again on BBC One, airing at 9pm.

In the latest Wallace and Gromit movie titled “Vengeance Most Fowl,” a record-breaking 9.38 million viewers tuned in, contrasting with the 6.81 million who watched the King’s annual Christmas address.

In the realm of television viewing, I found myself tuning into ‘Call the Midwife’ and ‘EastEnders’, which held the second and third spots in terms of popularity last night. The estimated audiences for these shows were 4.42 million and 4.39 million viewers respectively.

The top 10 programmes on Christmas Day (according to BARB figures) can be viewed below:
