Doctor Who script confirms musical scene was cut from Ncuti Gatwa episode

As a lifelong Whovian who has seen every episode and spin-off since the show’s humble beginnings, I must say that Russell T Davies’ return to Doctor Who has been nothing short of magical. The musical moments he’s introduced have added a unique twist to the show, making it even more enchanting for fans like myself.

Ever since Russell T Davies came back as the Doctor Who showrunner, it’s been quite a musical ride for me as a fan! From the catchy tune of The Goblin Song last Christmas to the delightful song-and-dance performance by Jinkx Monsoon in The Devil’s Chord, these melodic moments have left an indelible mark.

As it happens, a scene with a significant musical component, which had originally been penned into the script by Davies, didn’t quite make it to season 14 in the end.

It’s possible you recall that the somewhat controversial premiere, Space Babies, contained a couple of allusions to the popular song “Push the Button” by the Sugababes from 2005.

It appears the initial idea involved a scene inside the TARDIS featuring Ncuti Gatwa‘s Fifteenth Doctor, where he would dance and mimic the lyrics to a song.

Previously, some fans thought that was possible, but now, since the BBC has released the original script for the episode, we can confirm that it indeed happened as they speculated.

The scene would have taken place quite early in the show, as indicated by Page 3 of the script: “He SETS THE SONIC DISC on the JUKEBOX. A click is heard, followed by the needle moving over a RECORD, descending, and playing the Sugababes’ ‘Push the Button’.

The melody commences with a beat, followed by the lyrics, “Press the button.” The Doctor entertains himself by performing around a large button, pondering whether to push it or not. The song repeats this line four times, and he enthusiastically mimics the words while playing with the button. Ruby enjoys this spectacle and smiles. On the fourth repetition, he finally decides to press the button.

As the TIME ROTOR spins, the room shudders – a brief instance of weightlessness occurs, and the Doctor along with Ruby float upward before descending again. Ruby clings to the console, displaying a mixture of fear and exhilaration, while the tune abruptly transitions to its main part. The Doctor is in his element behind the controls, enjoying the music and the flashing lights within the chamber. Ruby continues to be awestruck by this extraordinary experience.

So there you have it! It’s not clear exactly why this moment was cut, but some Whovians seems a little disappointed that it didn’t make it into the episode, with popular X (formerly Twitter) account Bad Wolf Archives posting: “WE WERE ROBBED,” alongside an image of the script.

As a fellow movie enthusiast, I must concur that this edit significantly diminishes the episode’s impact. Each repetitive button press feels jarring and out of place, undermining the suspense and ultimately compromising the climax.

Another supporter penned down: “Oh dear, I truly hope these additional scenes include this moment today.
